I have long wanted a darker steel shade than the Testors enamel or Vejello steel. Ordered some Alclad Steel, and tried it last two days. Love it! It is a darker shade, and looks a lot like a heated oil steel finish. Here is a shot of a post I just made in my Allison turboprop build (in Aircraft forum).
The steel is on the burners in upper left, and the turbine section casings in upper right.
For those pieces I had previously put down Vellejo steel, a considerably lighter color. I purposely left some shading by varying the amount of Alclad in some areas. To make it look even more like burned steel I subsequently (after photo) put down a very transparent layer of Tamiya metallic blue. Photos of that will be posted soon on the Allison 1500 build in the Aircraft forum. That kit calls out for a number of burned metal areas! It is a real exercise in metal finish work- using far more metal finishes than painted areas.
