Has anyone found a good substitute for the Alclad Lacquer Cleaner?

My LHS has run out and I want to start painting and hate to wait till Monday.

I use a generic hardware lacquer thinner which works great & at lower cost.

I just wanted to make sure before running it through my Iwata. I am going to home Depot, now. I will probably grab some Klean Strip Lacquer Thinner. And you are right…it is way…way cheaper than Alclad’s.

I find Alclad the easiest “paint” of all to clean from my airbrush. I use turpentine or mineral spirits, or else lacquer thinner, depending on what else I am painting current project with. I have never had an alclad clog with either.

I started with the Alclad black gloss base coat on my Moebius Ironman kit, and got a nasty surprise. I have not done anything to the paint. Just pour and shoot, but then I noticed sputtering while shooting and when the first bit of paint was done I looked in my airbrush cup and saw a lot of particles in there. I decided since I poured it to my airbrush from the bottle, to pick some up with a pipet. I saw it was full of particles which clung to the sides of the pipet. Is this normal ?? Do I have a dud bottle ?

The alclad black gloss base seems hit or miss. It does require EXTREMELY thorough mixing. Stir the heck out of it (the badger electric stirrer is well worth it’s $8 cost here) and try it. If it’s still grainy you’ve got a bad batch.

Many here have reported excellent results using Tamiya gloss black as the base.
