Well, I claim that this Sherman fits here as a “model”, albeit 1:1 scale. And for once, it doesn’t need more rust!
That is something Tom, do you know what the plaque states?
Three problems:
-
This is the most readable image in the photo set.
-
The inscription is in Polish.

While I know a few words/phrases in Polish, I couldn’t read it even if I could stand with my nose against the metal.
Sorry.
Is this the exact spot where this Sherman got blown out? I can make out the turret on the right side of the picture. Where is the Albaneta Farm exactly?
This is a memorial near Monte Cassino. The tank is T-152523 and this now forms a monument to the Polish 4th Skorpion Armoured Regiment. The tank supposedly belonged to Lt. Bialecki. It was today’s topic of discussion on a Sherman listserv I receive daily.
There’s a pic and detailed caption in the Osprey book on Polish armor in WWII.
Thanks for such a cool post it’s amazing and the extra info supplied by Roy makes it all the better.
Now wouldn’t it be fun if Rob “scratchmod” Ferreria would grace us with his rendition of this?
Terry.
Yes this is a great monument. I researched it and found about a dozen photos of both current and how it actually looked when it it was built. It has been badly vandalized over the years. I bought all the stuff to build it a few years ago. You may have spurred me on to start the project again! Thanks.
Kenneth
I appreciate the creativiity of those who fashioned the cross out of the tracks making ot a more meaningful tribute.
