Airwolf

Hi all, this is my first scale model I’ve worked on in years. I’ve always loved this tv show and helicopter and built a few of the old Ertl versions as a kid. I figured this would be a nice model to start off again with.

The model I chose was an Asigawa 1/48 scale. The version with the extra clear body halves. The detail and fit so far look to be pretty good but there are a lot of things I plan on changing to get it closer to reality.

I started off with the cockpit first. Although it’s well detailed some minor adjustments were made. For instance the seat post are round and not square, and the seats have four brackets holing them on. So I decided to work on that first.

Since I was going to cut the new brackets out of styrene I went ahead and decided to add a lap belt. Just to see if my hands were still steady.

Since I went this far I figured why not a full harness?

That’s it for tonight. I’ll get the other seat done tomorrow and then figure out my next step.

Great start - looking good!

Yeah, she’s lookin’ good!

Is this the same kit as the Ertl version, just with extra clear fuselage halves?

No. I have both kits here and it’s completely different. Higher level of detail in it for sure.

How did you make the belts?

I cut it out of sheet styrene with a hobby knife.

yeah, the Ertl kit is a civilian helicopter that has some add ons to make it look like Airwolf, which is exactly what the TV show helicopter is.

Yes. This kit is just Airwolf. The boosters are molded into the body halves rather than add ons like the Ertl kit.

Dom’s seat is up next.

Unsat, this just won’t do…

So I worked with some putty and styrene till I got this.

I added switches and buttons and the friction lock onto the collective.

So this is the right seat. I decided to make the shoulder harness look as if someone just got out of it.

I can get a little overboard on posting my step by steps so if I’m throwing too much out there please let me know.

On the same note, since I haven’t done this in so long, if I’m making mistakes please let me know. Right now I’m just kinda making it up as I go.

Those seats really look the business- great work!!!

Question;

Are you going to use the clear halves? Then you can float visible areas much better and just fog over areas you don’t want or need to Show. That’s what I did with Tamiya’s M.E.262. I fogged color only in areas I couldn’t detail or needed decals in that area.

The rest is fully visible. That bird get a lot of looks and questions. I bet It would be fun on a chopper.

I’ve been considering it.

The scale is a bit off on this mesh I ordered. Yes or no on using it?

I think the mesh looks fine. Nice work. Loved that show as a kid.

Thanks! Here’s some progress shots.

I scratch built the missile rack today.
