Airplane Scale Sizes

[?] I seem to be kind of comfuse with the scale sise numbers I have purchased several model airplane kits and the ones I have recieved seem to be smaller than I wanted them to be. As follows:

Academy 1/72 Messerschmitt Bf 109G-14
Italeri 1/72 Boing X-32 JSF
Italeri 1/72 F-22 Raptor
Hobby Craft 1/72 F-117 Steallth

I also purchased a Italeri 1/48 U-2 R Sevior span- Trategic Recon. aircraft
and the size was perfect.

So the question is is the 1/48 bigger the 1/72. sounds kind of a stupid question,
but as they say, there is no stupid question as the question tha is not asked.

Thank you all.

Yes, a 1/48 model is going to be larger than a 1/72 scale model, half again as big as a matter of fact. A 1/2 scale model would be one half as large as the original. A 1/4 scale model would be one fourth the size of the original. A 1/48 scale model will be 1 forty-eigth the size of the original, and so on.

The larger the number on the bottom of the fraction, the smaller the value. 1/72 and 1/48 are the two most popular scales for plastic modeling of aircraft. There are some 1/144, which is VERY tiny and some 1/32 or even 1/24 which are HUGE.

Thank you all for your prompt response, I kind of had it backwords will probable have to try and find the planes I purchased in 1/72 in the correct size 1/48.

It is really great to be part of forum community I no longer feel Isolated.

Thanks.

What a minute… Correct Size 1/48 ???
There are many of us on this tree that will disagree… 1/72 is the scale I prefer for several reasons, Cost, Display, and difficulty. I find the smaller scale more of a challenge. I can’t get the Old “Toy Like” 1/48 scale Monogram and Aurora/hawk kits out of my mind when I see 1/48 scale kits. Hey whatever floats your boat I say.

A few more ways of looking at the scales are:

1/72 scale, or 1 inch equals 6 feet (72 inches)

1/48 scale, or 1 inch equals 4 feet (48 inches) or 1.5 times larger than 1/72

1/32 scale or 3/8 inch = 1 foot (there are 32 3/8s per foot), or 1.5 times larger than 1/48th, and 2.25 times larger than 1/72 scale.

1/144 scale or 1 inch equals 12 feet (1/2 the size of 1/72)

Building in the same scale gives you a good visual comparison of the real aircraft.
You will find that large aircraft, like the big bombers and airliners, are usually made in 1/144 or 1/100. There are a few made in 1/72 scale, and more recently a B-36 has been announced in 1/48th scale. It would take a medium size table to display this model.

A big consideration in what scale you chose to build is the amount of space you have to store kits and display finished models. Hope this helps, rangerj

You could put two (or more) planes in a diorama. Let me explain, If the main center piece is a 1/32nd scale aircraft, then put into the diorama a 1/72nd scale kit then a 1/144th kit. This way you would see not only the centerpiece but the same thing getting smaller but without the depth. It takes imagination to really see this, but it can be done so don’t be afraid of it’

No offence, but how can you live with this system and with all the fractions. I understand that it´s natural if you did grow up with it, but the metric system seems so much easier.

Again, no offence my friends on the other side of the pool.
