So, I bought this 1/48 scale Red Arrow from Airfix not exactly sure what to expect, but on overview of the sprues it seems relatively decent. After doing some research (and trying to figure out why the kit come with two fuselages… which I still haven’t found an answer too) it seems that it is pretty accurate asides for the radar display in the front office.
However, I have a big beef with the canopy. It has these ridges on it around the HUD and the main view in front of the pilots. I know that these are part of the kit, but are they really that prominent? Cause I really don’t fancy them at all.
If anyone knows anything about this, any information would be much appreciated.
I’m trying to get an after market cockpit, and I might just buy a vacuum formed canopy or something.
I will be following you build with interest.I have had my “issues” with Airfix but just could not resist the New Tooling 1/72 Hawk 120. It is used here in South Africa by the SAAF and I must say sofar I am rather happy with the dryfit and the massive decal sheet of high quality.
I built the Hawk in 1/72. I thought it was one of the better engineered kits I have encountered. The fit was excellent, even if the panel lines are a tad overstated.
I built a 1/72 Hawk too a few years back, and that kit was just a dream to build. However, I did have my airbrush back then, which made the red very easy to achieve. I’m going to hold off painting this bird till I get a new airbrush.
I believe that this kit is the new tooling of the molds, though I will be updating it with a beautiful resin cockpit from NeOmegs when I get back to the States.
And Yes, Milairjunkie, that is what I was referring too. Thank you. I might try decaling them when I get to that stage, or I’ll see if I can get my hands on an aftermarket canopy, as the lines on the kit bulge out and are far too prominent for my liking.
as far as 1/48 hawks go airfix’s is one of the best. There’s another one out there that I built a few years back. I cant remember the maker but Im pretty sure its was a no name company like the zeng defu kits. horrible kit. I remember struggling over how to do the canopy on that kit too, both with the det cord and the divider.
