Airfix kits, anyone?

What is the quality of the newer Airfix kits? I see that they have a model, in 1/48th, of my favorite version of the Canberra, the one with the salad-bowl canopy! I haven’t built an Airfix kit since, oh, since about the time the Earth’s crust started to cool, but I enjoyed the daylights out of the ones that I built. They were clunky and had thick canopies, IIRC, but I still enjoyed doing them, and I had a wonderful time scratching some parts for the inside (out of scale, probably, and clunky, too, but FUN![:I])

Anyway, I would like to get a few for a trip down Memory Lane. Come to think of it, I guess it doesn’t matter too much about the quality of moulds and all… I usually managed to build just about any kit I bought with not too much trouble. I kind of expected to rough it back then. Think Strombecker P-51 pine derby kits and casein powdered glue![dinner]

Thanks to all who reply.

With best regards.

Stephen

The latest offereings from Airfix are supposed to be quite nice from what is written about them on reviews. The most recent offereings I have of theirs are the E.E. Lightning, H.S. Buccaneer, and late mark Spitfires. I have not built any of them yet, but all look great molding and detailwise in the box.

I don’t know about their newly tooled kits but I have been having fun with an old Airfix Duck. It is how you described, a little clunky and minimal interior but it will look ok when I’m done with it. I have bought about a dozen Airfix kits since they got back into production, you can’t complain about the price, I don’t think any of them broke the $10 mark.

On the good old BBC this very evening James May had a 1/1 scale Airfix kit of a Spitfire manufactured and put together. The whole progamme was a hymn in praise of Airfix. He even visited the storeroom where they still store a boxed kit of every model they produced. Would love to get inside that!

Stephen,

Am new to this particular website but have always been a huge fan of Airfix. I want to make the model, I don’t want it halfway built when it comes out of the box. Weird, huh? Don’t normaly reccommend another magazine ,BUT, if you want to see a great article about building an old Airfix kit (Fiat G-91), look at this months issue from Scale Aviation Modeler International. There is an piece by Mike Grant (Mike Grant Decals) and prepare to be amazed. He has also posted a gallery on the Airfix Tribute Forum under the nickname “Migrant” (Mike Grant…Mi grant, get it?) and there are several Airfix MASTERPIECES and everyone is a golden oldie.

Enjoy the show…
