Airfix 1/72 Junkers Ju 87B-1 Stuka (A03087)

Just returned from a wonderful vacation on the Orkneys and the Shetlands, just to finish nr. 6 of my Stuka project: a regular B-1 version, deployed during the Battle of Britain, belonging to 9.St.G.51. In August 1940 it was stationed near Norrent-Fontes, Pas de Calais, France.

It’s a wonderful, joyful kit to build, beautifully detailed, but it took me a lot of time and effort to build it. That is partly due to the fact that the plastic is quite brittle, so small parts tend to break when they are cut off from the sprues, though I do this always very carefully. But even after that it could go wrong: I head to scratch new antennas and needed 2 spare MG’s from the box top solve the breaking problem….

Studying pics of B-1 made in the summer of 1940 show, that Airfix did their homework well: the colour scheme is that of a transition phase between prewar en wartime camouflage scheme and colours.

Already the colours and the pattern of the wartime camo are used here, but the greens cover almost all of the fuselage leaving a more narrow part of the bottom in RLM 65, as was done before the war. The same goes fort he small stabilizers on the tail wings, that are half green, half blue painted.

The font of the Stammzeichen letters and numbers are the same as in wartime, however the swastika was bigger in prewar times and placed more to the rear so that part of it was painted on the rudder. I used a swastika from the 1/48 Xtra-decal set that has the correct size.

Because I was not satisfied with the dark green paints I have, (they look too ‘British’) I chose two shades of black green: Revell Black Green RLM 70 was used for dark green RLM 71(!) and Hobby Color H 65 Black Green for er… black green. The result is not completely satisfying,for the colours are too close in shade, but I can live with that :wink: I do have now the classic dark green Stuka I wanted.

At this moment I cannot stand the sight of a Stuka, anyway for the time being, so the A-2 en D-8 versions that are in my stash have to wait In the meantime I will continue my work on Revell’s excellent B-17G.

I sure do like the Battle of Britain stukas. Unfortunately, I can only see the last pick.

Nice write up, would love to see the pics.

But i have one concern, you cannot stand the sight of Stuka’s. Are you ill. You will love the SH Ju 87A, second best stuka i have built so far after the academy kits.

Hi Bish,

I have been building 8 Stukas this year, all different versions. I have the SH A-version and a Fujimi D-8 in my stash, but I have to build something different to avoid a modelling crisis. :wink:

Yep, can see them now. I like it, nicley finished.

8 this year, i like that. I recently finished 3 all at once and have a 32nd coming up.

I have that Aifix one in the stash amongst the 8 72nd ones i have not built yet, interested in what you say about the plastic, going to have to watch that. Cheers for the heads up.

I am looking forward to the B-2 this year.

Hi all,

Several of you brought to my attention that muy pics cannot be seen. Thank you! I do not know what the problem is: I can see them but you obviously not…
Since the demise of Picase I store my pics in albums at Google Photos. When I post a message about a model, I go tot he specific album, rightclick the pic and choose the option “copy imgae adress”. The link is than copied tp my message with the image-tags added ( [img] ).
But since a few weeks there are problems. When I follow this procedure,I can see the pics, but you don ‘t. It seems that the albums or pics can only bes een when you have a Google account, or have received a personal, individual admittance to my albums. I guess Google has changed theitr policy.
I have 3 questions and hope you will bes o kind as to help me out:

  • What is the matter with Google Photos here?

  • What am I doing wrong?

  • Is there a safe place on the web where I an store my pics and make links that can be copied into my messages?

Looks great! I like the Airfix kits, but the plastic is soft. It’s almost a given I will be making another control stick, they seem to always break while removing from the sprue. The fit is usually pretty good on the newer toolings.

I have the Academy “tankbuster” Stuka in the stash. I’m a little intimidated by the canopy, but your post has me bumping it up in the que!

Don’t be, just get some Eduard masks. I have yet to build an Aifix Stuka, but have built both of the academy kits and they are the best 72nd Stuka’s out there IMHO.
