Airfix 1:24 Spitfire Mk. IXc

Hi All,

Have been away from model building for a while due to work commitments etc., but on and off (mostly off!) over the past few months I have been tinkering away with this Spitfire. I have finally finished it! Has been built completely OOTB, the only ‘extras’ I bought were the MRP paints for external use (Tamiya for everything else) and a Numbers and Insignia Paint Mask Set from DN Models. I have seen many of you use and comment on spraying all the markings instead of using the box decals and thought I’d give it a blast. I think things turned out good and a big improvement on decals (except for the silly little ones!).

For some reason I had a few issues with the paint lifting when removing tape and some masks, this despite priming with Tamiya Extra fine Grey first, never had this problem before. It was some ‘old’ previously decanted primer, though kept in a glass jar (old paint bottle)and well shaken/mixed before use. Anyone else ever have issues with old decanted primer? When I say old, I mean maybe 6/8 months.

Anyways, despite those issues, here is how it turned out. The engine was built and installed however, I’m sure it’s down to me, I had issues getting all the covers to fit snuggly and a lot of gluing and clamping was involved to get it right / good enough!

Comments and critique always welcome.

Very nice work!

Thanks for sharing it!

Very nice paint, sorry it gave you some grief, but in the end it came out great!

Painting the 4 color fuselage roundel can be tricky. you nailed it!. Did you use a panel line wash? If so, what color? I’m looking for a color that will compliment the grey and green camo on the 1/32 Tamiya ixc.

Most internals painted with Tamiya Acrylics with a Flory wash…Grime

FYI, colours used: all MRP Lacquers

Cockpit: MRP-228, Aircraft Grey-Green.

Underside: MRP-112, Medium Sea Grey

Top side:MRP-115, Ocean Grey / MRP-110, Dark green.

Spinner/Tail band/ Lettering: MRP-118, Sky

Insignia: MRP-122, Marking Yellow / MRP-123, Marking Red / MRP-124 Marking Blue / Tamiya XF-2 Flat White

Invasion Stripes: Tamiya XF-1, Flat Black / Tamiya XF-2 Flat White

All Sealed with Alclad II ALC-310-60 Klear Kote Gloss

Then a Flory Wash, Dark Dirt

All sealed up with a light coat of Alclad ALC-314-60 Klear Kote Flat.

Smoke and oil stains added finally with Abt 502 oils, ABT090 Industrial Earth

Hope that helps

Steve

Yes very helpful thanks. I have Flory dark dirt and ABT industrial earth. I use Tamiya and MRP paints too. Again, thanks for the detailed list of materials used.
