Airfix 1:24 Gruman F6F-5 Hellcat colours

Dear All,

Just been lucky enough to get my hands on the new 1:24 Airfix Hellcat.

My small problem is that the colour callouts are obviously all Humbrol, but I only have Tamiya acrylics and don’t have funds to splash out on a whole bunch of Humbrol ones.

Can anyone give me close enough tamiya comparrisons (or mixes) to the following Humbol colours:

226 Interior Green (Interior photos seem to show a totally different green than this 226?!)

90 Matt Beige Green

123 Extra Dark Sea Grey

125 US Dark Grey

24 Matt Yellow

72 Khaki Drill

147 Matt Light Grey

Here is a link for conversion of the Temperate Sea Scheme colors.

Grummen would have used MAP Standard paints - not British made, but very close match. For interiors, I imagine the factory would have carried on with American specificied colours, whatever that may been at that time. Could explain the mismatch of interior greens you noticed?

Jack

Exactly. Under Lend Lease agreements, aircraft made for other nations would use the closest US ANA paint equivalent for exterior colors, and interiors would be in the standard US production colors.

the photos seem much greener to my eye

I thought the same thing. I don’t know what the actual Humbrol color looks like but the color on the instructions looks more like a khaki drab or faded od to me. I can’t say if it’s right or wrong but I decided to go with a green that’s much closer to the firewall color in the first link you show. I used a medium green from Model Master and lightened it a little. I’m sure you can get there with Tamiya. I didn’t reply earlier because I’m building the US version and didn’t know if your version would be the same.

It’s probably a mix of zinc chromate and black that gives a more lively green:
