I’ve heard of this paint, by Model Master. It’s available in their Acryl series, but none of my hobby shops carry them. does any other paint manufacturer make a similar paint? or can i just add some white or dark gray to produce a similar effect? I only use acrylic paints, otherwise i would go for the enamel modelmaster interior black.
I use MM Enamel Interior Black all the time and think it’s great. It’s now my colour of choice when a cockpit calls for flat black. Although it looks black to the eye, if you look at it next to a part painted regular flat black, you can see the difference.
If you are looking for this in an Acrylic then you can try Tamiya NATO Black XF-69 (which also makes a superb tire colour), or you can make your own by mixing black with a small amount of grey.
I went to the hobby shop and compared the gunze tire black and Tamiya NATO black with the regular flat black. i found that the gunze tire black is darker than NATO black, but still a tad lighter than regular black. I’m afraid that the NATO black will make my model look too light? any ideas?
The color you’re looking for is made by Polly Scale too, and I find I use it for everything from tires to cockpits that had black interiors on the real thing. It really makes genuinely black insrument faces stand out against an instrument panel painted in this color. Before this, I found I got a perfect shade of RLM 66 (which is about the same as this color) by mixing 50/50 MM black and MM gunship gray. Why, you may ask, not just mix white? Because by mixing these two to exactly the same portions, I got the same shade every time, and didn’t have to store any.
