Air rescue GB?

Any interest in a group build focused on aeriel rescue? Military or civilian fixed wing, rotorwing, lighter than air vehicles used to save lives. It includes a wide selection of aircraft from the air sea rescue flying boats of WW2 to modern air ambulances.

Armed combat aircraft like the MH-60 and HH-3 Jolly Green Giant are more than welcome as are military aircraft pressed into service as long as the individual aircraft modeled can be shown in humanitarian service (UH-60, C-130 etc used to support disater relief efforts).

There are quite a few out of the box options available for those with limited time.

I’m thinking January 1 through July 1 2009 if there is an interest (I turn into a complete flake between July and October and would not be able to be any use moderating the GB after July).

Aaron- It would give me a reason to start and finish my SB-17 in 1/72 scale

Let’s not forget the ever faithful H-43 Pedro.

Shemya? Who did you make mad to get assigned there?

It could be worse, at least you didn’t get assigned to Minot.

Ikar01- contract Job. shemya is not as bad as you may think. better than my last job Baghdad Iraq. HH-43 Pedro with a firefighter skid pack would be cool

Already have a rescue diorama goin’ on I’d jump in…

SB17 & HH-43 would be great projects.

Hans I’m fine with started projects as long as you won’t be done before the 1st.

LOL… Ok then… Getting done before the 1st is NOT going to be an issue, lol… Getting by then, well…[:D]

Ok, 2 maybe 3 plus myself, there must be a few more out there who would find this entertaining, probably just need a little proding. [}:)] [:D]

Maybe this will help, this is not a complete list but it is a start. The following aircraft have been used for missions that would qualify for the GB. Many of these are even available in kits that qualify out of the box, many more can be done with easily available aftermarket decals. I’ll even extend this to arctic / antarctic supply aircraft since they often bring medical supplies and evacuate ill / injured people from remote bases.

I’ve been interested all along, as I’d love an excuse to do a Do 24 ambulance…but the timing just won’t work…I’ve got too much going as it is…Good luck, and have fun, guys!

Cheers,
Alex

Aaronw- Heck I have 27 on your list I can’t understand why you are having a hard time getting people to join this build.

I don’t understand some of your a/c listed P-47, P-51, B-17,B-24, B-29? and some of the others But I guess any A/C could have been used in a SAR mission

Cardshark, I can extend the dates if it will make a difference, but that would mean people would have to accept my frequent absence between July and October. I understand all to well how easy it is to get too many projects started.

I was hoping there would be more interest, but oh well we’ll see, still a bit of time to see what happens after Christmas.

Some of the odd aircraft you noticed fall into the “show me” category, the examples are out there if someone researches to show how a specific example of the aircraft fits. The 5 you listed were frequently used in the Pacific to search for downed aircraft / missing ships because of their long range, so if someone researched to show their example was involved in a rescue, it would qualify. A long shot but it offers someone the opportunity to build an aircraft with an interesting history.

The German Luftwaffe uses an Airbus A310 as a flying hospital, the USAF has C17s they have made into flying hospitals both are used to return injured solders from foriegn lands to hospitals at home.

The USAAC started to use the DH4 in 1918 to fly a doctor into the field to assist in the rescue of downed pilots trapped in their aircraft. Later they became one of the first military aircraft modified to carry a patient.

Some of the others will be revealed if the build gets off the ground, I’ve had this idea since last March or so and have been collecting little factoids to use in the build since then.

I’d really like to have at least 5 to make it worth while but I’ll leave that up to you and Hans, if you guys want to give it a go with the 3 (4? not sure if Ikar is in or not) of us, I’m ok with that, maybe others will join in when they see some progress.

This where I stopped with the Kingfisher build… Still acceptable?

There’s still a ton of figure work (I’m using 4 more figures for this one, it’s depicting a real event in ASR history) and water-work to do, plus finishing and weathering the Kingfisher…

Hans that looks like it will be a great dio, if you say you still have a lot of work left I say go ahead and use it if this build gets going. We will have to see though, it doesn’t seem to be going far at the moment.

I guess this is a no go due to a lack of participants, just doesn’t seem worthwhile with only 3 of us. Maybe some other time.

Hans I hope you will post some pics of your diorama when you are done.

Urich same goes for your SB-17 if you go ahead with it.

Sure, it’ll be in the diorama forum (That’s the 5th one down on the forum start page for some of you that never been there.[;)])… I have another Kingfisher in the Hangar just in case… Since the PBY GB is going on right now, it might have been some bad timing, Aaron…

I’m in with a quicky. Monogram 1/40’ish Cessna 180 Civil Air Patrol. I started painting the cockpit but will wait to continue. Probably won’t take more than a week.
