air racers

hi all, one thing i haven’t seen much of are military ww2 fighters decked out as air racers or civilian planes. they look great in civies.

I’ve seen a couple of them on this forum. Quite a few get shown at contests. Mostly the P-51.

You can get the older version of Miss America (Hasegawa), plus Rare Bear, Vendetta, Red Baron, Critical Mass and others can sometimes be found, all in 1/72. Unfortunately, with the exception of Rare Bear, none of the later, to the best of my knowledge, is still racing.

I would love it if they came out with Rare Bear in her new paint. Strega and Precious Metal would be cool as well.

hi model crazy, thanks for the reply. I’m doing a 1/24tth BBD in a really sexy red and white dress.

Air racers often get posted to the Airliners and Civil Aircraft forum, the one just below this one. Of course, not all air racers are converted military aircraft- some were built from scratch as racers, others converted civil aircraft. The forum mentioned above deals with all three types. Personally, I love racing aircraft and have built a number of racer models. Schneider cup racing- unlimited power seaplane racers were top technology and held aircraft speed records back in the days of that cup.

I too like the look of the air racers. One of my favs is the Supermarine sea plane racer. I built one a couple of years ago when i first got back into modeling but it didn’t come out so pretty good , so now that my skills have improved,I’d like to get another one ( Testor’s 1/48 scale ) and take another crack at it. I think Glencoe still makes a number of racers from the 40’s/ 50’s and i would like to build them all.

I am wondering if anyone makes the Hugh’s Racer from the movie "The Aviator " I would love to find that one.

Wouldn’t this be a wild paint scheme to try. Way above my skill level.

I totally agree about the race planes looking good.

The Hughes H-1 racer has been produced by a few companies including Planet models, Czech master resin and a few others. A quick search shows that Hannants has the Planet model kits in 1/48 (both the long and short wing versions) in stock on their website.

One of the lessor known European brands did offer a kit of the Hughes Racer. If I remember right it was fairly pricey.

I finished one last year. Known as Smirnoff 80, flown by Mira Slovak, winner of the first Reno Air Race Unlimited Division in 1964. It’s the Trumpeter 1/32 kit with a couple of tweaks. I made the decals myself on an Alps. Came out OK.

Smirnoff 80

Ty Peter and Don for the kind replies. I found a Planet model kits in 1/48 resin on Ebay and I’m waiting for the 4 day auction to see for how much I may get it.

That came out great Mike!

awsome build!
