Just noticed on PMMS that AFV club is making an 88! Its gotta be 10 time better than the tamiya one! coming early 2005.
AFV has two 88’s out now. A Vietnam version, and a modern version. I wonder what this version will be? Did they say?
are you talking about the German 88 arty?
Doc,
I think he’s talking about the WW2 German 88, not the M88. [:D] I haven’t been able to find a Tamiya 88 so I am excited about the AFV Club release.
The Tamiya kit is ancient, but still a nice build. I’m sure AFV is pulling all the stops and whistles for this. I’ll bet PE and an aluminum barrel will be included. The way Dragon and AFV seem to compete these days, I won’t be shocked to see Dragon release one also.
That’s good news! Just added to my growing list of “gotta have it”
Old news. It’s been up on the PMMS site for a couple of months now, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for that release date.
The Tamiya kit is definitely an oldie, but still a good kit to get and build.
Really? WHere have you been looking?
I see one at every hobby shop up here, at every visit. They’re not OOP as far as I know. You should be able to find one online without a problem.
There’s a bunch on ebay. I have one and will build it before I buy another. I have got to finish some stuff before buying all newer kits. It’s killing me. Ahhhh, who am I kiddin, I will be first in line for pete’s sake!!
Ted
opp, ya I meant the infamous German 88. Should be a good kit.
I built a Tamiya 88 about 6 or 7 years ago. It is a nice kit even in todays standards.
That AFV offering should be a gem.
Is it the PAK41/43 you mean? Its a 88
I built that one…
AFV Club’s kit will be the Flak 18 8.8cm. It’s the earlier version of the Flak 36 or Flak 37 as depicted in the Tamiya classic. (this is different than the earlier AFV Club kit of the Pak 43/41, a dedicated anti-tank weapon).
Nord: Nice build–But… DO not want to sound like a jerk, but … the 88mm did not have the red and white rangeing rods (used in artilery only 105, 150mm field guns ect). The rods should be cleaning rods (brown in color). Sorry.
Just wondering, what are the red and white rods used for anyway? Sorry not an arty builder, but I do have a M7 Priest lined up, does that count?[:I]
Skarpotchi,
The red-white rods are aiming stakes used to triangulate for indirect artillery fire. (Please don’t ask me anything technical beyond that as I wouldn’t have a clue either! [:D]). They are usually three stakes and commonly seen stowed on the backs of SP howitzers like the Hummel or Priest. HTH.
