Aftermarket track links. Plastic or metal??

After seeing a product review on Amazon I thought this might be a good idea to inform those new to plastic modeling about some misunderstandings. The issue this fellow had was he bought Trumpeter workable track links and the description that’s on almost every box had the words “steel tracks”, and he thought the tracks were metal because of the word 'steel". As most of us are aware companies like Trumpeter, Hobby Boss, Modelkasten, etc. all produce plastic links. The only companies I’m aware of that produce metal tracks are Fruil and one other I can’t remember the name of. Since these tracks are for armor modeling I thought this would be the proper forum to post this.

Even then this guy is ignorant. Friul tracks are NOT steel!

This I know. Apparently this dude didn’t. He was having a mild melt down over it.

I like the HobbyBoss plastic track in my LVT7/AAV7 kits, I don’t see an advantage in replacing them with metal. Separate track pads in each block is a nice touch too.

My 1st and 2nd gen LVTs are a different story. I have the Friul metal tracks for my early LVTs (and some even better 3D-printed sets). For my LVTP5 and LVTH6 I picked up Spade Ace’s metal track set.

They are a steal if you don’t pay for them.

I rarely buy anything without researching the item first. It would have taken 30 seconds to find reviews on the item and/or find out what they’re made of.

Just a guess, but from the original post, this may be the comment in question. http://www.amazon.com/Trumpeter-Russian-650mm-steel-track/product-reviews/B002SA58OI

Over $30.00 for these? Looks like he didn’t shop around either.

Phil_H that is the one I was referring to. He assumed the “steel track” part of the description mean they were metal tracks. You’re right. research will make you happier in the end. I do my best to find out what’s in any kit before I buy it.

Musta been a noob…one day he’ll be laughing about it…

Hopefully…

Need recommendation for T-55 tracks

I hope we soon see a day where more/most manufacturers include workable tracks within the kit. Meng Model has gotten some repeat business from me for this. It makes the building process so much more enjoyable to me.

I bought a catch all set of Trumpeter T-55, T54, T-62 and the capture version Israel used. I forgot the designation of the latter. I don’t know if those will work for what you need or not. I guess when all else fails go for the Fruils.

What’s the capture version? That sounds like what I need for my Tiran 5.

I think the Tiran 5 was the version I couldn’t remember the name of. If you have the Tamiya version of the Tiran 5 It will probably work. These Trumpeter Russian 650mm tracks work on my Tamiya version of the Js 2 I bought.
