Alright folks early mark 1’s,2’s and 3’ and 4’s did the first units over there have armor dark yellow oversprayed on the panzer grey? and did the areas where unit markings were, left grey( for example around the turret numbers). and was it armor dark yellow that was used or was it something different, if so what shade. my reference books were loaned to a friend who was building armor and I have lost contact with him. what is a good reference for this issue. thank you

Yes, the vehicles arrived in in a panzer gray scheme. The crew then often smeared mud onto their vehicles. They used mud for 2 reasons, 1, it blended in with the surrounding dirt perfectly, 2, the paint supplies in North Africa were very limited, usually officers vehicles would have paint.
For replicating Dak yellow I have used Tamiya Dark yellow and Tamiya Desert yellow.
I liked the results of them both. The desert yellow has more of an orange-brown tint as opposed to the yellow tint of the dark yellow.
I think I will be using the dark yellow more often though. in black and white pictures the yellow seems to be a light tone.
The markings were left on the dark gray scheme and mud smeared around them.
The mud also often wore off or was just not applied to some areas. Take a look at this pic

the markings are untouched and some of the mud has scraped away.
here is the dark yellow i used over a dark gray base coat

here is the desert yellow applied staight to the kit- no primer.

Ok thank you rebel, so very early go with mud over grey, then later go with tamiya dark yellow on vehicles. I went to get a Mark 1 and came back with mark4 ausf D so over to afrika it goes. Hobby lobby has a sale 50% off so I hope they have a mark 1 if not I’ll order one. also with supply being a big issue jerry cans on the vehicles would be common correct?

yep, and most of them were used for water since it is scarce in the desert.
I think I might have worded my senteces wrong. They used mud, but I used dark yellow. There’s not really a way to show the tiny bits of dirt in this scale, so paint will work fine.
rebel i understood what you meant. by the way I am working on a civil war uniform for reenacting, poor kentucky farmer with round felt or straw hat wooden canteen and brown cartridge box! thank you for the pics a picture is worth a thousand words.

Awsome! Another Reenactor! I want to get a wooden canteen soon. they make them now with a plastic interior lining so that it will not leak. Have you done any reenactments before?
No I havent yet. it will take me until next summer to get all my starting stuff! I have decided to join a dismounted kentucky infrantry unit here in town. their friends of ours plus my kids are in the c of c with their kids.
