i was just looking up info on an old conversion i have and saw that the site was up and running again. just wanted to share.
Yesssssss! So much good stuff! Better stock up before he folds again… [^o)]
Good stuff? From AEF Designs? Are you sure??
aw come on rob, they have some cool oddballl stuff [;)]
Cool and oddball, yes. None of it was of actual “good” quality.
Agree with Rob, the quality was horrible. Most of their items had to be rebuilt to even be usable.
By “good” I meant, “not available anywhere else”. Yeah, there’s some fit issues, and bad castings occasionally, but it beats having to scratchbuild every conversion…doesn’t it?
That depends on several factors like desire for that variant, how good/bad is it and how much it costs.
He’s probably one of the first garage resin companies I ever ordered from back in the 80s. Much of what I got ended up being poor resin castings of Tamiya items. For the price (at the time), it would have been cheaper to buy the Tamiya item, a better quality part and less work to do it myself.
For the IDF fans, he does plenty of items not found elsewhere, but quality and usability issues still abound.
“but it beats having to scratchbuild every conversion…doesn’t it?”
Depends on your skill level and how motivated you are to have that particular conversion (versus the other models on your shelf). Sadly, I actually owned some products from I-Corps back in the day. They were probably universally the most horrible among the horrible resin kits ever. I would have done better using wood glue and cardboard.
Personally, I have no history with AEF. Maybe look over the products at a model show before you plunk down your money? That might be safer. Good luck to you.
Unfortunately they’re pretty hard to come by (although I’ve never been able to make it to an AMPS Nationals) so I had to bite the bullet on a couple of things to try out. I’ve got the following:
IDF Toga conversion (Academy M113 Zelda)
Syrian T-34/122 conversion (DML T-34/85 NVA)
T-80 Turret update (DML/Revell/Zvezda)
and an IDF Puma Ram full kit - not listed on his website any more…although the conversion for the AFV Club Centurion is.
I’ll have to get cracking on some of these and let you all know how it pans out! [:D]
I’ve had two, maybe three AEF conversions. One for teh Israeli M151 scout and one for the Israeli M151 TOW support vehicle. About the only usable parts out of the box were teh tires and in the case of teh TOW support, the windshield, thoughitneeded straightening. The seats were patterns to scratchbuild from as were teh rool bars. Both were at show clearance tables.
I also bought a Russian mine roller that may have been AEF, but I can’t recall. It went to gether okay, but I had to guestimate the assembly as teh directions were nearly nothing. Do a search at any site dealing with armor, and you’ll get a plethora of horror stories.
Dupes is right about the neat and unique conversions and those of us intersted in Israeli conversions can get really tempted. Falling into temptation, however, is rarely a good thing.
