It would be nice to have a function to mark posts read, either singly, some, or all, if the new forum’s functionality includes something like that. Other forums have such a feature.
I know that we had asked for it in the old forum, but it was never implemented.
Not a must-have, but a nice-to-have.
Thanks for the reply, but I don’t use Discourse, though, and don’t plan on it. Ideally, I shouldn’t have to go to an external/3rd-party application to do something like this. If it’s a technical limitation of the forum’s software, that’s OK.
I’ll add that I work in application development as a quality assurance analyst, so I often think of usability issues in the websites I use.
This forum is a Discourse forum. That’s the platform.
Ah, OK, that’s Tim! That clarifies his comment. I have seen Discourse as a reply/commenting tool on websites like that of the NY Post. I didn’t realize the forum was built with it.
Upshot is, there’s not a feature to mark posts read. No sweat, like I said, if it’s a technical limitation, that’s understood. It would be a nice-to-have.
What’s nice is that it is a Discourse Forum, so there’s reams and reams of how-to already out there. It also means that what it is is what it is. We can dress it up, but the forum is an out-of-the-box, stable platform. They roll out updates, and we install them. The capabilities are what they are. This subcategory is a legacy feature from the old forum when we were doing bascially all of the coding in-house. That’s not happening anymore.
OK, I see a Dismiss button now, and on clicking that, it marked posts in the forum I was in as read. I did get a status message that those items would not show up again as unread, so I don’t know yet if it functions like a “mark read” feature, and when there is new content on those posts, they’ll show as unread. Or it might mean that they’ll never show as unread again. I’m watching them to see.
