Thankyou all for your tips, support and encouragement! Lessons have been learned, and a disaster averted that would’ve otherwise befallen a more expensive kit. I’ve since managed to source some low-odour mineral spirits, placed some Abteilung502 oils on order and lined up another cheap kit to “ruin” as I try a different technique…
May I also suggest, since you will now use mineral spirits and oils for the wash, to have at least 2 coats of acrylic clear on prior to the wash?
Tamiya’s X-22 is good for this.
My two go to clears are
AK Gauzy Agent Gloss
Alclad Aqua Gloss
They both spray straight from the bottle and dry to a good hard even finish
Keavdog & Tim, thank you both for your “visual aids” to help us remember these combinations. I’m a visual learner so these helped a lot.
Looks great, now add a few figures to bring it to life !!!
