Past posts have mentioned diluted acetone as a thinner/additive for putty? What is the acetone being diluted with and what is the ratio? I already have a can I use for cleaning airbrush nozzles so I don’t want to buy nail polish remover.
Diluting acetone?? Ok, that’s weird.
I use acetone to thin squadron green with no problems. I’ll use laqcuer thinner in a pinch. Both work well.
Diluting acetone. That’s just weird.
I use either liquid cement, laquer thinner, or rubbing alcohol, depending on the brand… Only use acetone for removing parts from my fingers or fingers from my other fingers after a super glue mishap…
ya?? I’m a trained automotive paint dude… and I’ve never heard of diluted acetone… ???..
what dilutes it ??? …lol… [bnghead]
I use acetone regularly thinning my filler putty (same type used in the automotive industry) as well as paint before airbrushing. The putty can be thinned as much as needed; quite runny if being applied with a small brush or thicker if applied with a palet knife and the paint is generally thinned 1:1. You will find that acetone will evaporate rather quickly so be sure to spray your thinned paint on wet and reapply to the putty as necessary. I have had problems in the past with masking pulling off the underlying paint and one step towards remedying this is to use acetone as the thinner (on Model Master paints at least).
Water - water dilutes acetone. You don’t want to do this - it’s only for washing acetone away. Acetone is so hot it evaporates almost instantly, unless you have a rag soaked in it. This is what I use for cleaning glue tips, and glue bottles with. It’s not much good for anything else, except accelerating drying times for paint. You don’t need to dilute a chemical that’s already hot in nature - just use it wisely.

I use acetone and do not dilute it at all. I buy man’s acetone in tin cans at the hardware store, not nail polish remover, which is already diluted, and may contain scents.
I use it for thinning Squadron putty, either by applying the putty to the surface and then using a cotton swab dipped in acetone to remove the excess, or by putting a blob of putty in a well on a ceramic palette and then adding acetone with my ol’ Mr. Wizard Chemistry Set eyedropper, to make a homemade Mr Surfacer, which can be brushed onto the surface.
I haven’t tried it with other putties or sculpting media, because at this point, I get good results with the Squadron putty, and haven’t tried others (except a generic automotive 2-part epoxy, which I didn’t like). So, I can’t speak to those applications.
And as Hammer noted, it is very useful to dissolve CA glue, if you’ve glued yourself to something. Hopefully not both hands at the same time.
