Acedemy's tiger 1 finally done.

If you remember, one of my first model I’ve posted on the forum was academy’s 1/35 tiger 1, well I finally after a long delay, and manage to find some suitable tracks, I’ve manage to finally finish it. So here it is.

The kit is moslty out of the box but there is some stuff added like the wooded planks and of course the tracks, based on a tiger model from military in scale, I remove the front panel and a side skirt for some interest. These pistures were taken with my new camera.

Excellent job. I’ve built two Academy tigers, one with interior. You have done a better job than either of mine…Kenny

Great Job![Y]

However, if I may suggest. The tip of the main gun is to black and looks very glossy. I’d give it a little more attention. (i.e. fading, weathering) This is of course IMHO. [2cnts]

See ya

Hi T-Rex,

It’s been a long road for this kitty, but you’ve finally got her done. Great job [:)]

Just a few observations/suggestions .

I know it looks kinda cool, but the muzzle didn’t get anywhere near that blackened, if at all. The shell cartridges used “smokeless” powder which didn’t blacken the muzzles.
The tow cables and track changing cable shouldn’t be rusty, they were kept clean and well oiled to prevent such rusting. Rusty cables would fail bleow their rated strength and could be dangerous to the users.
The air filter pipes were rubber (I think) and should not appear rusty.

Otherwise, she looks great,

Thanks for posting. You’ve already gotten some good pointers. Two things I would recommend are

  1. the commander’s cupola is rotated about 180 degrees wrongly. The hatch opened to about 2 o’clock (as you face the front) and not 8 o’clock.

  2. pay attention to the numbering directions. German AFVs were numbered very specifically and no “095” would have existed – especially not for a unit with Heavies such as a Tiger I.

Very nice-the colour and chipping is just right and the tracks look spot on.

Only a couple of points which the lads have covered…

  • Muzzle is far too black and it wouldn’t be a glossy black anyway-get it back to the normal colour and perhaps use a bit of pigment around the muzzle to add discoloration. It works for me.
  • Tow cables-far too rusty. Pull them off and paint them a dark grey.

I’ll say again, I love the chipping and paint colour and the tracks look great. The muzzle and cables are a 5 minute job so no worries there.

great job listen to the other guys i thought i would throw this out there, as hinsky said, paint the cables dark grey, but also dry brush them with steel and add a tiny bit of rust here and there

Just want to add my $.02.

I think it looks fantastic, but I also think it’s awesome how everyone is offering up constructive criticism to get the model to look even better! There were a few things I noticed as well but I had no idea about #095 being incorrect, or the cables being kept in tip-top shape.

This is such an invaluable forum for great pointers!

I’d say this ranks up there with the best of your builds. Color and tracks look good. The observations when corrected, will make it even better.

Well first of all, thank you for all the comments and advise, keep in mind that this model was build back in 2006 so not everything could be fixed (like the commander’s hach).

-Yes thats true the black is too glossy, but I saw many models with the muzzle blacken, but alittle pastel and drybrush should help.

-Really? I thought cables were often rusted because of rain and constent use, but then again it is the desert, not much rain there, fortunatly its been rusted with pastel so water can wash that away easily.

-Nothing really I can do about the decals, I lost the original decals, in fact these are leftovers of my old tamiya hanomag, in fact if you look at the marking on the Ieft, it isn’t the same as the marking on the right, but has the same meaning. As for the number 095, I didn’t use reference so I figure that since this is an ealier tiger 1, is marking number would be low like under the 100’s like 095, not 243 or 173.

The track have been painted with a new technique I learn from the magazine military in scale, simple start by painteing it falt black, then maetallic grey, added some medium rust pigments then dirt pigments, and finallydry brush metalic grey, the result are impressive.

Here’s some more pictures with possible figures (not painted yet).

That all fork!

Looks like the commander go into a bar fight the night before these pictures were posted

Or someone pulled the old “soot on the eyecups” trick on his binocs. [:D]

Sorry T-Rex, just kidding… [:)]

Towing cables are liable to rust: you’re correct there. However, since they were such a vital component of the tank’s survivability, they were cleaned and kept greasy – therefore fighting off the rust.

As for the numbering system: German tanks were numbered within their UNIT, not their production sequence. Tank “101” would be the first Company tank commander’s vehicle. Tank “212” would be a tank in the 2 coy, 1st platoon, 2nd tank. Tank “332” would be 3 coy, 3rd platoon, 2nd vehicle. See?

And Tiger Is were extremely rare vehicles (although you wouldn’t know it if you looked at the modelling world as your reference) that were fielded in only a handful of units – all of which were extensively photographed. Most of these units followed the standard numbering systems.

Only about a dozen were sent to Africa.
