Academy 1/72 F/A-18A+ Hornet turned custom CF-18

So, after some years, I finally got back into modeling, and wanted to build a custom CF-18 Hornet, based off an Academy F/A-18A+ kit that I spotted on eBay. I ordered the separate decals from Canuck Model Products. They actually went on quite easily, almost as good as Cartograf.

I decided to build strictly warplanes in 1/72 scale, for a while at least anyways, so I have some favorites in mind, like I love the F-15E, F-22, just started an F-14A, but this thread is about the CF-18, more specifically a Balkan Rats.

So I took my time with this one, because I wanted it to be special, and always wanted to fly one, heh. Plus, this was my first time trying my hand at weathering. Aside from the weathering, the rest of the jet was airbrushed using Model Master acrylics.

With more time and practice, I maybe could have done a better job, but here it is!

This image compares my build with a diecast CF-18.

Here’s the link to the whole album (there’s like 50 pics):

Like I said, with more practice I could have done a better job. Maybe I’ll build another at some point down the road. I do have symmetrical markings yet.

I hope you enjoy this, but I’ll take any criticism, in the hopes that it’ll make me a better modeler.

You did a phenomenal job on this kit. Very nice weathering as well as enhancing the panel lines. Keep up the good work!

I would love to critique your work but I can’t find any faults in it. Very nice build and your weathering is spot on in my book. You Sir, have some serious skills. Looking forward to your next build .

Wow thanks so much for the kind words everyone… really, really appreciate it! [H][Y]

So good i had to go back up and check the scale. Would have sworn it was at least 1/48. Super job on that weathering and paint. Loved the cannon burn marks especially!

Very nicely done. Realistic finish. Good job.

That looks super! The only suggestion I have is to sand the tires down a bit to show weight. The weathering looks great, nice clean build. Thanks for posting

Hey thanks everyone… means A LOT! UnwaryPaladin, good advice about the tires! Gonna roll with that (no pun intended) from now on. [Y]
