Well I want to build a 1/48 corsair and want you guys to help me out. So, Is the academy kit any good or should I go to another brand? Cost is a factor but I want good detail and a solid kit. I may also add aftermarket stuff so any suggestion there would be welcome? Thanks.
I think the Academy kit are the old Hobbycraft kits. They are good but the Tamiya Corsairs are better and worth the few extra bucks.
Thanks Mike. The academy kit is alot cheaper, I can buy it and all the detail sets for the price of the tamiya kit. But am I wasteing my money on detail sets for a subpar kit?
Tamiya Corsairs are GREAT !

The Academy corsair is pretty good. It doesn’t fall together like the Tamiya but has good external detail and can be built into an excellent 1D. I had fit probelms with the flaps and the engine cowling, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed. My only real complaint was the decals, They are very thick and did not do well under decal solution. I have built both and with some extra TLC the Academy kit can be made to look just as good as the Tamiya.
I found the Academy F4-4B canopy and windscreen were too big. If you compare them to the Hasegawa F4-4 they are lot larger.
i built the academy corsair a few years ago. It was a good kit but i had a lot of trouble with the decals.
