I would like to know if there is any special techniques that I need to use in working with ABS plastic. Do I need a certain adhesive or will super glue and liquid cement work? Is painting the ABS going to be a problem or can I use Model Master enamels and such. Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.
As long as you use the right liquid solvent and properly prime before painting you shouldn’t have any major issues.
What hawkeye said. Here at work we use a rubber compound to put ABS components together. Its horribly messy but it swells in contact with water which helps seal the pipes. And in terms of painting, we just use regular house paint lol. Thats not really any use to you. but i thought id mention it.
Most regular cements for styrene models won’t work with ABS. You may wish to see if your LHS carries Plastruct Plastic Weld cement, as this is formulated to work with ABS (some of Plastruct’s products are ABS).
Get thee to the hardware store, and ask for ABS glue(common used in plumbing).
ABS has a smoother surface than IP so many paints won’t stick well, get a self-etching automotive primer and you are golden.
Have fun.
Thanks for the info. I will give it a try. Do you know if the ABS cement is compatiable with styrene?
ABS glue won’t work on styrene. Sorry.
