Did the /22 version of the Sdkfz. 251 w/the 7.5cm PaK 40 sport the “ambush” paint scheme? I have mine done w/the 3 color pattern and am itching to put on the ambush dots.
Nothing I have read has said yes or no. The Dragon paint suggestions do not show it, but I would think that it was used.
From memory, the “ambush” scheme appears in only a few types of AFVs pointing to the conclusion that it was factory applied at only certain sites. For instance, I’ve never run across an “ambush” Stug III wartime photo (although they were one of the most frequently seen on the late war battlefield) or any SPGs (Hummel, Nashorn, Wespe).
Off the top of my head, these AFVs I’ve seen in “ambush”
Tiger II (Henschel turm)
Sturmtiger
Panther G
Jagdpanzer 38(t)
Jagdpzr IV
I don’t remember but I don’t recall any Jagdpanthers, Jagdtigers or even the ubiquitous Mk IV in the spotted Ambush. I could be wrong on these however.
I have never seen a photo of a SdKfz 251/22 in Ambush scheme.
I do have color plates and photos of Pz IV H in such a scheme, a color plate of a 1st company, sPzJgAbt 653 Jagdtiger in Ambush Scheme from The Combat History of sPzJgAbt 653, A Hummel in the “Disk” variant of the Ambush Scheme, also a Brummbar, a Grille and a Stug IV in this scheme.
I have my doubts about the Ambush Scheme being purely a factory applied finish. There are too many “one-off” photos of vehicles that theoretically should not be sporting this paint scheme.
When I build, I usually think along those lines. 60000 shermans and not one could have been painted with____ and OD camo? For me I do whatever looks reasonable or interesting unless I’m doing a specific vehicle. If you want to paint it in ambush and you aren’t bent on perfect accuracy I say go for it.[tup] Have fun building what you want to build.[:)]
