I just picked up this set and was totally overwhelmed by the amount of pieces. It even has individual bolt heads. The question I have is it comes with brass rod that apparently (the instructions are vague at best and include instructions for things that do not eve apply) is either cut into three pieces and reattached with the two end pieces angling down OR the piece isn’t cut and is bent in two places. This forms the bar that the mesh scherzen hangs from. Any ideas or suggestion? Nothing is ever easy!
the bar is bent from the photos ive seen
Well that is going to be easier than if it needed to be cut into three and reattached. I wasn’t sure what the bend would look like and if it would look right
just checked a Panzre IV book and they are cut
sorry
ill try and get a scan for you but it will have tobe monday
Thanks. No hurry, as this is probably a while away.
There are some very nice color shots of Thoma shields on a restored Pz IV H in the Compendium Modelling Manuals 21, Panzerkampfwagen IV. Of course they don’t show the bar close-up…The cheesy line drawings I have in another book show them as 3 pieces…I think. At least it shows a parting-line in the drawing where they bend. Great help, huh?
Now, what you need to do is cut them in 3 pieces, then carefully tap and thread the ends and screw them back together, forming a perfect 7 degree bend at the joint…Just kidding. [;)]
I’ll see if I have anything else.
I don’t know whether to laugh or cry!!
I compared them to the kit part. The AM part says three pieces, but the kit part is five pieces and at each end joint is a metal collar. I might use some of the kit and some of the PE if I can’t get the bars right (the PE set has no mention for the metal collars and no corresponding PE pieces
I sort of thought they were just like pieces of water pipe with threaded nipples joining them together, but now we have to find out if they are 3 pieces or 5. Can’t make this easy now can we? [(-D]
Never a dull moment with you Jason! LOL. Just giving you a bad time. Semper Fi, mike
No, never a dull moment at all!! Yeah, now I have to find out how many pieces.
Do you have the Actung Panzer 3 book. Shows you how it should go on??
no, but I may need it, huh?
I’ve got the drawing out of Achtung Panzer #1, but it’s not very detailed and I can’t really tell. It looks like 3 pieces, but I wouldn’t bet the farm on it.
So the question would be- “Is Dragon’s incorrect or are there multiple ways it was done” Maybe there were varioations between the (A) and the (V)?
Since I haven’t actually built anything with Thoma shields yet, I haven’t bothered to collect any references on them. I’m afraid that’s all the info I have…
Thanks, though. I’l find something or make it up!
Man jason, you always seem to find the really bizarre or tough things to do…this makes your diamond Panther zim look like child’s play! [:P]
