A7 CORSAIR II FINISH

Hi, i am building the a7d corsair naval version of the VA93 blue razors, with gull gray and white scheme, some thing like this

http://modelingmadness.com/scotts/decals/super/ss48945.htm

a quiestion arise, and i hope some lights in this dark situation,
could I finish the A7 with gloss finish, satin finish or flat finis?? it is the first time that i build some navy aircraft,

do the NAVY PLANES use some protection coat for the salted weather

Since it’s a scale model, you’ll want to tone down the sheen of the paint so no more than a satin finish should be used. I prefer flat myself but it’s really up to the individual modeler.

Im building an F3h-2n Demon right now and I read in the historical part of the kit that the top was painted FLAT gull grey and the BOTTOM was painted Gloss white. These are the same colors as yours. My point is that those are the actual colors used back then. However as “bstrump” mentioned for the scale effect you shouldnt use any thing more than semi-gloss. Im going to paint the white in semi-gloss and then everything on top Flat.

Hi, i think the same way, will p ut some tamiya flat base to a future base to do the finish, i will keep you informed, thanks for the advices, here is a picture of how it goes, any sugestions are wellcome

heyyy i have to paint the nose with a blue color, wich would i use???

Make sure to post pics as you move forward!

Ok, now i will comment a thing that happens to me with this model, this is an Ace (corea) model , in scale 1/72, it seems to be the same mold as the italeri mold, or the italeri the same as the Ace, ( i think ace is older), the decals are from the italeri kit, but, the instructions od the italeri and the box says that the color for the topside is DARK GULL GRAY, with the number fs 36231 and the model master number 1740, i had the paint and use it, buy to dark, when i tell this to a friend, he told me that the navy plane are just gull gray fs 16440 and model master 1729, i overpaint it and so is it now, but why italeri put other nubmers , it is the first italeri model that i build, but if it happens with a navy plane , how is it with the WWII german planes and the RLM colors??

The Corsair is looking GOOD, Gabo!! [:)] Really nice job, thanks for the updates! [:)]

Take care,
Frank

A REALLY GREAT TIP, IF SOME DAY you want to build the italeri kit, take care to put the tail antenas aht last step, because the decals for the tail goes first, i mean the antenas goes over the blue line decal of the top ok, just that

A very nice build thanks for the pics and the info…

Thanks for the Head-up, Gabo! And for the pics! U ever thought of checking out the Latin Aircraft GB? - Calvin

no, i did not hear about it, please , give me a light

here is another picture, the panel lines were enhanced by apliying chinese ink thinned with water, and whiped with cotton swabs , cotton and water, all this was done after the second coat of future and before apliying the flat coat, i did use flat base of tamiya mixed with future , the mix can be used for many models, i did use an old model master bottle well cleaned and a pair of bb´s to keep the mix uniform,

WOW man, your plane looks awesome!!
Really good work…

Regards,

Jürgen

Gabbo,

Very nice work. Your friend is correct. The correct color for the top of the aircraft is FS-16440. That is the Federal Standard color number. You could have used 26440 for semi gloss and/or 36440 for a flat finish. The bottom color is insignia white, which is also used on the control surfaces, as you did on your Nam era models.

As others have stated the paint does not stay glossy very long when the aircraft are in service. It is not uncommon to see Navy aircraft with spots of zinc chromate primer on many parts of the aircrafts skin when they are operational, especially at sea.

Add a Skyraider (A-1 H/J /E) to that collection and you will have the full array of Navy aircraft that did most of the work in South East Asia from the mid to late 1960s. Note; This is not to discount the helos or the Greyhounds, or the Skyworriers, or the Hawkeyes, or the Vigilanties, and their crews.

Thanks again for sharing your work with us. It looks great.
