A6M2-N Tamiya 1/48

Hi All. Started this one just after New Years as a nice relaxed build to have a bit of fun with, also struck me as a great opportunity to try salt weathering as I wasnt to concerned about the finish, just the fun. Also used were Tamiya’s detail up kit for the A6M, though being a Rufe I only used the seat belts and pitot tube.

First up the Trolley

I half as$ed paineted it flat black, then dry brush aluminium and gave it a heavy rust wash

Ok onto the plane itself, as you can see I had lots of fun with the salt weathering except for the outer floats which I hand painted later and you can tell the difference. Weathering the decals I used a combination of chipping and sanding.

Forward part of the cockpit, not much to see really

Seat and belts. All refrences told me A6M’s (flot or otherwise) had weight lightening holes in the seats, but the tamiya one have solid so I pre drilled the holes with a red hot needle then added seatbelts.

Well there she is, my first go at weathering an aircraft. I apologise if any shots are a bit dark still experimenting with a new camera.

Well when the Mrs asks where the salt is we know what happened![chfck]

Excellent finish on the float version of a Zero fighter. I think it turned out perfect and would think this type of weathering is something you do a lot. Thanks for sharing the pictures Andrew.[Y]

Cheers[t$t]

You sure you haven’t tried salt weathering before? Looks like your a pro at it. Excellent job on the weathering![Y][Y]

Thanks for the comments guys. I’ll admit the salt was fun. I mixed it with water before putting it one (instead of painting some water on and sprinkling salt on) and I cake’d it on in some areas.

Andrew

Great job on the salt. Did you use rocksalt. All you did was spread it with water?

Great work

Its a nice kit isn’t it?

Tigerman, all I had was ordinary table salt, so thats what it was, then made a paste with a touch of water and spread it on. Going to try the otherway (water then salt) next time.

Raptor/Andrew, A nice relaxed build, it was nice, a little filler underneath at the wing roots and was only work needed.

Andrew

Looks good from here. Thanks for sharing.
