A Tamiya Color question

Talking about the rattle cans. New to the Tamiya line of both the cans and jars. Is the the rattle can an acrylic? Smells like a lacquer. So I can’t safely do an oil wash and wipe down the excess.

The rattles are “acrylic lacquers”, whatever that means. They thin down with lacquer thinner, and I treat them like mild lacquers (will bite, but won’t eat plastic).

Also…if you’re doing a metal-skinned aircraft, AS-12 Bare Metal Silver can act as one heck of a good primer.

As for the oil wash…why not? The Tamiya stuff isn’t a traditional lacquer, and as long as you’re using a mild thinner for your oils (I’ve used Mona Lisa Odorless Thinner over bare Model Master enamel with no problems), I don’t see any harm coming. Add a clear coat in between and you’re solid.

I don’t know if the labelling has changed, but it says “synthetic lacquer” on the front of the can. If I recall correctly, it is soluble in Mineral Turpentine (which is a commonly used cleaner/thinner we have here in Australia) which is similar to mineral spirits.
