I sit here working on a Mexican Nicomisa company licensed Monogram B-25H and wondering why I am bothering with this thing. The fit is terrible, I had to grind away trenches in the wing so that the engine nacelles would line up half decently with the rest of the wing and I still get a 2 mm gap on each side. I have been struggling with this beast for the better part of the month and I keep reflecting back to that Italeri B-25 Mitchell in the hobby shop. I fantasize of its fit as I tape over the seams to keep them in place while the glue sets on my beast. But something drives me onward, envisioning the final result of my hard work. So what compels you to work on a sub-par kit knowing that there are better kits out there? Is it the enjoyment of doing something difficult? Is it pride? Or are you just cheap like I was when I bought this Mitchell for ten bucks??
With a title like that, I thought you were gonna say you were working on Modelcrafts 1/48 F-82!!!

The Italeri B-25 is a rebox of Accurate Miniature B-25. It builds up beautifully, but has fit issues all over the place, no need to dream about it! The B-25 you have on your hands aint all that bad! For the $$$, I’d take the Revell/Mongram every time!
What keeps me going on a “sub-par” kit? The feeling of accomplishment I get after I have kicked it’s arse into shape! I love the challenge!

I like the challenge of taking older,somewhat crude kits and turning them into nice display pieces. To see what more modern paints and techniques can do to turn them into something we never imagined when we were building them as kids. Sort of giving a rebirth to kits that most will only collect and put away on a shelf in their original boxes.

No problems about badmouthing Revell/Monogram. My favorite kit is their Airacobra. Built the first one as a kid and when they reissued it I bought 3 of them to keep in my stash in case it goes back out of production. The fit is great and the interior detailing is fantastic and the price rocks!
With me it’s a question of who wins…coupled with the fact that I need to develop my skills to get the results that other modelers achieve. So I get into a kit that’s probably destined to be a crash test dummy and spend a whole bunch of effort fighting with it. The comfort I take from this process is that there will come a time when I can justify spending $229 for a box of plastic knowing that I can make a really good model from it!

Though I’m mostly a sci-fi modeler, the title of this caught my eye.
Look on the bright side: at least you have the option of going to a less-difficult kit or building one after the pain-in-the-[cnsod] one is done. With a lot of sci-fi subjects, you’re stuck with either the stinker being the only thing available, or the only one that’s availabe for a decent price.

“Better kit” is relative… ANYbody can build the “modern” Shake & Bakes… I dunno if it’s pride or not, but I like the “sub-par” kits (which where usually “state-of-the art” when I started building 'em), knowing that the way it turns out is entirely up to me via my sklls with Gizmology, not someone else’s Technology… Don’t care how much sanding, filling, or scratch-building I have to do… That’s why they sell putty, sanding films, and styrene… Whatever the finished kit, it’s mine and no one else is gonna have one exactly like it on the table…
That too… [;)] Sure, I buy “modern” kits… But only with the Hobby Lobby 40%-off coupons or when they’re marked way down on clearance… A great model comes from the heart & mind, not the wallet and credit card…
I won’t pay “modern” prices for anything, lol… I even use those coupons on paint & glue…
Hey, maybe that’s an idea for another Group Build? The outlaw bikers are known as “1%ers”… Maybe a “40%er” GB?

Thanks for the welcomes everyone, unfortunately, my build is being put on the back burner for now… after filling in the trenches with Tamiya epoxy putty, I have discovered that this kit is missing one engine. I will have to contact Monogram to see if i can get a replacement. I must have lost it when I moved recently.

Thanks for the link Hans, I ordered the engine. I believe it uses the same part as the B-25j so I should be in luck.
Oh hell… My dyslexia kicked in and I read B-52 as in a Stratofortress… As me ol’ shipmate Popeye would say, “Oooohhhh… How embaras-skin…” [:$]
Sorry about that confusion… Yeah, the B-25H and J kits share everything but the nose and decals… And of course, it’s not OOP (The J-models)…
