A Reminder About Superglue

Even though I am an experienced modeler, and was well aware of this problem, my brain must have been taking a nap today when I used superglue (CA) to glue a clear canopy on a nearly finished model. Yup, it totally ruined it. Superglue fumes will fog clear plastic as it cures, and this thing ended up looking like the canopy was packed with snow.

Even old timers can have a lapse of caution, like I did!

Nice to know I’m not alone. My F4 Phantom with the landing gear the wrong way round still mocks me from the shelf…

One way to prevent that was the use of Future on the canopy.

Now that the damage is done, you can go for this effect in a display:

LOL it happens now and then no matter how many years we have been modeling. I was going to mention the Future trick but ikar beat me to it.

“It was a cold and frosty morning when the mission orders came through…” [:D]

But !

At least you didn’t have the model glued to your hand too . I had a hard time explaining the destroyer hanging off my fingers . I do believe everyone thought it was hilarious . Xcep me that is ! T.B.

It may be worth getting a set of these:

Or look for the sanding sheets instead of the pads. They can make a canopy look like new. It may be tough doing the inside bbutit may be worth a shot.

That set of sanding pads does work well. The windscreen on my Monogram F9-F Panther had framing that was totally too wide. I sanded it all down, and of course this meant polishing out all those scratches. I used each pad in order and finally polished it with Novus #3. I think it turned out okay. It would’ve looked better with a Future dip but I didn’t know that little trick back then. [:D]

Actually one of the funniest super glue stories that I have ever read or heard concerned one of us who managed to spill a bottle of super glue on his hand and then got said hand stuck to the back of his cat (which apparently did not particularly care for or enjoy that type of attention!)

If you can get at it—denatured alcohol does a good job of removing CA ‘frost’ from clear parts.

Actually those shots were taken at Korat at night when the temperature was only about 80 or so. It would warm up once the sun came up.

I remember when superglue first appeared in the 70s we received a report from a civilian police department that someone had robbed a bank and to make sure they could get a way, they glued everybody’s hands to the walls with superglue. This stuff was brand new and as far as neutralizing it, the information was very limited. They ended up having to cut everyone from the wall and taking them to the E.R.

I never saw a follow up report on how they solved their problem, but some scary and painful images come to mind.

I have a friend who’s daughter used superglue on her eye lid!!! Needless to say they had to run to the ER while the poor kid was screaming in agony. Thank God they were able to neutralize the reaction and she did not get any permanent damage.

I learned about CA fumes when I used the stuff to glue a pair of glasses back together after they broke at the bridge. You’ve never seen anyone snatch a pair of glasses off his face so fast, and it still stung for a half-hour or so. Guess I should stick to modeling.
