hi folks!
i am currently building a Hansa Brandenburg W29 naval fighter,
& i was wondering what would be the correct color 2 paint it…
the wings feature light & dark blue & off-white naval lozenge camo,
& the instructions call 4 Humbrol #127, a matt light grey, but the
box art has a bluish tone 2 it, which i really like the looks of.
any suggestions as 2 what paint i should use would b
greatly appreciated.
thanx in advance !
While my experience with WWI kites is limited-- I fly a sim that has a WWI faction- I will forward this to them and let you know their reply-- they have lots of reference books and this is sure to be in there…
You don’t say which kit you’re building, but here’s a build report on a W.29 fighter where the author describes the paint he used. I think his kit looks great!
Lufbery:
the kit is Eastern Express’ rebox of the TOKO 1/72 W29,
it comes w/ lozenge camo decals so unless they r really bad
i will b using the ones from the kit…
thanx 4 the link !
The ‘Blue’ Pattern lozenge camo colors were described as 1) Light Violet Grey Blue, 2) Light Blue, and 3) Mid Blue.
Additionally, “all side surfaces of the fuselage, floats, rudder and tail fin, including all struts were painted grey blue. The undersurfaces were kept in a light grey colour, excluding the wings which remained in the original clear-doped line.”
Paints were to be of a matt finish.
Some painting anomalies existed, “for example on some aeroplanes the printed fabric was only applied up to the gunner’s cockpit while the forward upper fuselages of several W 29s appear to be painted in a darker grey than that of the fuselage sides.”
Jeeves:
thanx 4 the info !!!
i still need 2 figure out which paint 2 use 4 the “grey blue”, tho '…
is there a tamiya or model master color that would b close ?
Jeeves:
thanx again, that color looks close 2 what i’m after…
the a/c actually looks pretty good in the gull grey, but i
want that bluish hue so it will look more ‘watery’…
now i’m worried about the lozenge camo, wondering
if that off-white is actually supposed 2 b light blue…
well, if it looks good, i’ll probably use it anyway…
unless i find some aftermarket naval lozenge decals in 1/72.
now i need 2 set the time machine forward a bit 2 get back 2 1944
4 my Tuskegee builds, LOL !
Greetings all; Glad to see your still into WWI frostygirl!
Jeeves, you may find that R. Rimell is not fond of reproducing his Datafile artwork, especially on free sites.
Well-- I asked my buds and this is what I was provided with…I only was looking to help frosty out…didn’t get any $ for it. Regardless-- frosty if you didn’t get it while it was up let me know and I will email it to you. Good Lord…
when the off white was in the water it looked blue. so people would make profiles that make the off white blue ish … and sins thare are no more pics of it. Its what people can remember. its like a roomer that keeps going around and it gets more and more mest up.
till it terned lite blue . lol and the under side off the plane is the last to be painted. so the top will get lots of paint and the undersurfaces will not get paint so blue may fade to white whith a blue tint that and salt . hope this helps you to make it look more real . S! good luck
Hey Jeeves, I’m not trying to sound off. I just know Ray. He adds notices to his material and if you post something from an Albatros Pub. he will ask you to remove it. Not trying to make trouble for you just trying to help you avoid the hassle. Peace.
No offense taken Stephen really…I was just reminded of all the other copyright issues going on now in modeling. Mr. Rimell has a right to be protective as he does great work-- what I had in the post just happened to be what was in reply to my request for help for frosty. I didn’t pay too much attention to the source as I was just happy to be able to help her out-- this seems to be one of the more obscure kites… but you were right to warn me…I will try to be more careful in the future.
