Just left the Squadron and Hannants websites and I’m wondering.
Why do they say that you need to use a certain detaling set to a certain aircraft kit?
Does it mean that you can’t use it somewhere else?
Like Aires set for Hasegawas P-47D, to be used with that specific kit.
Does it mean that I can’t use with Tamaiya’s kit?
Do I have to do more work to make it fit in the model?
What do you guys do when you have this kinda problems??
Are the Aires sets worth their money?
Hi Jan
When they say it’s for a certain kit, in theory this means that the set should be a drop in fit for that specific kit. This doesn’t mean that it can’t be used for another manufacturer’s kit. It just means you may have to massage it to get it to fit. I’ve done this a few times and usually it goes pretty smoothly. Hope this helps.
i hear aries sets are worth every penny, and just cos a set is designed for a certain kit, doesnt mean it wont work ok on a different brand, it may not be totally optimised, thats all. usually it wont matter too much.
Well, quite often it makes a big difference. Resin detail sets usually replace the kit supplied components & are optimized to fit the advertized kit. Depending on design differences between the kits, trying to use them in a different kit is a crap shoot. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don’t. Save youself the headaches & buy one for the correct kit. Aires detail sets are usually good, although I think True Details or Black Box are often better value. As far as your example on the Tamiya 1/48 P-47D, the resin parts won’t add much over the excellent kit parts. All you really need for that kit is some decent seat belts.
Regards, Rick
I’ve used a couple of the Eduard sets and had very good results with them.
It’s better to get the one for your particular kit. They are usually designed to just drop into the kit (though this isn’t the case sometimes.). You usually need to do some sanding and test fitting to fit it anyway.
I’m using Aires P-47D pit for the hasegawa kit at the moment, but I’ve put it in the Academy kit, and it didn’t fit too badly. The Aires pits are usually pretty good, but if you’re building Tamiya’s kit, a resin cockpit isn’t really needed. The kit cockpit is very nicely detailed. There isn’t much of an improvement in a resin pit. Just stick in some PE seat belts and it’ll look good.
hope this helps.
