Last year September I visited Vliegend Museum Seppe (Flying Museum Seppe) located in the south the Netherlands were they keep several flying vintage aircraft.
My main reason for going was a excavated Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-5, Schwartze 11 (Black 11) 5 Jg. / 3. “Udet”, II Jg. 3 that was shot down (by an P-47 if I am not mistaken) after I took of from Schiphol airport Amsterdam in December 1943.
It is slowly but surely is being reconstructed. We thought we modeller have a lot of patience, believe me it is nothing compared by these guys. I absolutely loved it that the majority of the paint is original.
Motivated and inspired beyond believe I decided to make said bf 109 (actually I made 2, both 1/72 Hasegewa). I did not want to make another 109 though. This made me decide to make thinks more interesting by doing a lot of thinks for the first time:
diorama (base by Air Model Germany)
all airbrush application of paint (Humbrol Enamel)
weathering
antenna wire (nylon fishing line)
resin detail set (Eduard)
resin drums ‘n’ crates (can not remember were they came from)
In all I am pretty pleased with the results. However I do not think a expensive resin details set is worth the effort and money in 1/72 scale. Anyway, enjoy.
Nice build! The 109 has always been one of my favorite subjects. If you don’t mind a little critique, on your next 109 you should angle the main wheels in a bit instead of mounting them perpendicular to the ground…somewhere in between where they are now and the angle of the strut would be about right. Other than that minor detail, I am really impressed with your work. [tup]
Looks good 1/72 I like the paint work on black 9. I do very little 1/72 aircraft but i can tell you weathering them is hard as it’s is very easy to over do on that small of scale, but you did a very good job. the only thing I see is it looks like the 11 decal is silvering at the top in one of the pics.
Outstanding pics of the old bird. It’s cool to see the actual mottle and insignia as it was! You did a great job on the builds. Kudos to you for the 1/72 (hey, that rhymes).
thank you all for your complements! I will take input regarding the angle of the wheel, silvering decals etc to heart at my next build.
I always seem to have problems getting decals to properly fit whenever I apply them to matt finish paint (matt paint always seems to be a little ruff on the surface). i did use some special decal fluid (Mr. Hobby / Mr. Mark Softer). Any tips?
