Can anybody tell me if there are any other modifications to the F-86D that made it into a F-86L? I know about the SAGE antenenna, but were there any other? Did the instrument panel stay the same? Also what can anybody tell me about the 1/32 Revell Typhoon? Is it decent, good or not so good? Any pitfalls I need to be aware of? I picked one up today at a garage sale for $1. I figured at that price it should be worth it. This one even has the instructions and decal sheet![:D]
Mate,
Wish I could help you with either question!! But what luck - you gotta be happy with the pricetag of one dollar!
Good luck on the build!
I’ve got two of the Typhoons you refer to. They built up quite nicely. Minimal fit / finish issues.
Thanks murph. I had never seen one before and didn’t know anything about it. Being as its a subject and scale I don’t normally do, I’d never looked for one. Lee, it was one of those bittersweet moments, What attracted me to the garage sale was seeing a guy walking to his car with the Trumpeter MiG 21 under his arm. Stopped found the one kit and bought it. I asked the lady how much she sold the other kit for and she said $5!! Her husband had left her for another woman so she decided it was a good time to clean house. His builds had ALL gone in the trash!!
Roadkill, whenever I read stories like that, it ruins my day. Even moreso when you hear those stories where the modeler gets to the poor, bereved widder woman BEFORE she throws the stuff out and gets it all for free. Never happened to me, sadly.
On the subject of F-86 K and L, they featured that bizarre clamshell afterburner and one or both added a drag chute, as I recall. I passed a junkyard outside Houston and nearly wrecked when I saw five Ls lying our in the yard on their bellies, in Yugoslavian markings. Yes, we did ship tactical a/c trying to make communist Tito take our side over Russians. Didn’t totally work, but it helped keep him fairly independent. Have to say, that’s one place that may have been better off under the iron bootheel of the Red Menace, give events of last 12 years. I’ve seen decal sheets of these F-86s in Yugoslav markings. Superscale, I think.
