Has anybody seen that movie? and if So, what was the German tank they kept using? It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before from the Germans… Was it a fake tank they used for the movie, expecting people not to notice…OR is it something new? It’s an old movie, but I like it.
The German tanks in the movie were Leopard I’s from the Dutch army. At the time of filming these tanks were front line class AFV’s they’ve since been replaced several times. Most of the German armored cars and halftracks were mock ups used to give the correct feel for what the vehicles looked like.
Hello .
I agree with Sparnicus ! Leopard 1’s. The movie " Band of Brothers" , has some very good " representations" , of German armor in it. At the end of the movie , they tell you how they made these German " Representations". I seen an Italian made movie about the " Battle of El Alamein" , and the British Infantry , dismounted from M-113’s , supported by M-24’s. LOL. But to keep , a movie , within its budget , I guess, you use what you can get.

“PERSEVERANCE”
Well ABTF was made almost 30 years ago and running German armour was scarce indeed. No-one would have been able to depict accurate German Tanks unless they used remote controlled models, which stick out like the proverbials on screen. In fact, some of the Shermans in ABTF are mock ups on trucks, although most don’t see it.
Against that, BOB was only made a couple of years ago. CGI and special effects have come a long way since then, and these days there is no reason that accurate CGI tanks can’t be added to the movie frames after they footage is shot. BOB used mock up’s not CGI , 'cause it was cheaper hence the limited views of running gear, etc, but in reality they had the bigger opportunity to get it right than ABTF. Therefore they should be the ones to get pinged over their shortfall of effort.
That said, in 30 years time when CGI tigers and other German tanks will be running rampant on our TV screens, I guess our kids will be complaining about lack of accuracy in BOB as we do to movies like Battle of the Bulge and ABTF now.
I think A Bridge To Far is a great film and they did a great jod in the Armour, ok they had Leopards in it, but they were the closest tank they could get to look like a Kingtiger
they also had C47s, Spitfires, Shermans a Chaffee(on fire) Humbers, Daimlers loads of stuff
battle of el-alemein, yep i seen that movie too. pretty funny. the box cover has the leading italian guy with an american 45, apparently saving a british soldier from his friends.
good times, gooooood times…
I have ABTF on DVD and it still grates on me that all the German stuff is field/panzer gray…and it didn’t take much to realize a lot of the Shermans were HVSS types but hey, at least they weren’t trying to pass off M48s as Tiger tanks. [:D] You do what you can with what you have…seeing all those C-47s take off and in flight was amazing…along with the para drops, BoB used CGI for that and ABTF still ended up with the more realistic shots IMHO.
Ahhh, Hollywood…where any tank can be made into an authentic German tank by adding 5 gallons of gray paint and a couple of crosses and any actor can be German by just pronouncing Ws like Vs. The magic of special effects. The sad thing is, they still do stuff like that. Pearl Harbor, with all the $$ they spent on CGI has a battle of Britain scene using post-WWII Spanish Licensed Messerschmitts with obvious Rolls Royce engines (the same planes they used in Battle of Britian circa 1968 and pre-CGI special effects.) They barely look like 109Es
a) U-571 was a good movie i thought. Even though the stuff never happened to the sub, I’m considering marking revell’s 1/72 u-boot for it. b) ABTF was also a great movie.
