A blue gift to myself

I was in my lokal hobby shop yesterday and they had a sale on some Hasegawa kits. I was able to pick up this beauty for only 60 kronor (about 8.30 US$), I was quite happy since I´m low on cash right now.

The only color recomondation for that beautiful NAVY blue scheme is Gunze Mr. Color 30% #34 Sky Blue and 70% #71 Midnight Blue. My color chart dosn´t cover Gunze, so do you guys have some recomondations. Is it the same blue like on the Corsair?

Happy holiday /Johan

The blue is FS 15042, Gloss Sea Blue. It is easy to find in most brands of model paint. The leading edges of the wings tail and tip tanks are a metalic gray color. By the way, I built this kit many years ago, and if it is the same Hasegawa kit, it is quite nice for its age. The color of the rockets under the wings as shown on the box is incorrect. They should be painted in a metal color like aluminum body and fins with olive drab noses/warheads. The interior should be interior green (FS 34151 and black), I believe. Enjoy it!

Thanks for the help, Tom.

The kit looks quite nice actually, with fine recessed panel lines, beatifully printed decals and a crisp cannopy.

Thanks again /Johan

Great little kit you picked up. Hope you enjoy your build. Bryan

Considering it’s age, it’s a very nice kit. If you use enamels, ModelMaster Gloss Dark Sea Blue is a pretty good match. Have fun with the build.

That is a nice kit, Johan, and look forward to seeing it come together! [:)]

Every time I see a Panther, I envision that movie; “Bridges at Toko Ri” with William Holden, Mickey Rooney, etc. What a wonderful showcase of a beautiful jet!

Take care,
Frank

It’s a good, basic kit. I built one in Blue Angels markings a number of years ago.

What a great find… have fun.

Oh yeah, Col. Brubaker and Mickey Rooney in the top-hat. Great movie!

Thank you my friends, got to catch that movie!

Hello Johan,

I’m not sure about the best blue to use (I’m sure all the above advice is good), but I’ve had a chance in the very recent past to see both the Corsair and the Panther. Not side by side, but within a couple of weeks of eachother. Visually, I would say the blues are indistinguishable one from the other.

This is probably less use to you than a grain of salt, but may help if you’ve already painted a Corsair from the Korean War.

Take care,

Mark

Tom,

do you know the equivalent of FS 34151 in gunze mr. color(lacquer)?

Thanks,
Kel

I made this several years ago. It went together pretty good. I used MM flat sea blue. I think flat hides the little scratches. I overcoated with Floquil RR clear gloss for decaling and final finish. It’s part of my Grumman Navy fighters, and VMF 115 aircraft groups that I am attempting.

Cool plane and oine heck of a deal! Make sure to post pics.
