A-6 Intruder kits.

For some reason I have the urge to build one. I have combed the net looking at what I have to work with and it appears my only option for 1/48 scale is the RoG, but it has raised panel lines. In 1/72 I read that the Italeri has sink mark issues and the Fujimi has general contour (most notable the nacells) issues. Other than that what opinions do you have of any of these kits? Looking to build out of box, though if I can find a resin cockpit I MAY opt for that single luxury.

Back in the mid '80s Revell put out a line of 1/72 kits of aircraft from the movie “Flight of the Intruder” and I built 3 or 4 of them. I couldn’t tell you about the accuracy of the kit but I remember having a lot of fun building it and thought it looked good when I was done. I have also done Hasegawa’s 1/72 A-6e and enjoyed that as well. Again, didn’t get out the micrometer and I tend to not care about EJpin marks and little fit issues 'cause that’s how we improve right? I just remember enjoying building one of my favorite jets. Sadly, a carnivorus moving van had it’s way with all of the above so I got no pics to show you. [BH]

I’ve builded years ago the a-6e from italeri (1/72). Generally good kit and good decals, with the wings position option. I have only replaced ejection seat (only for a maniac intention of details , the kit seats was good), the rest as oob.

heres some pics:

… pilots ladder opened was lost in war.

I have on the box the hasegawa prowler but apart very good decals the kit is too old for modern standards of details .

I’m currently working on the 1/72 Hasegawa A-6. (See the Secret Santa III GB). It’s very light on interior detail, and there are some seams that need filling work - nothing major. I would guess that the complex geometry of the underside of this A/C make it a real beast for a mold designer. There is a mix of raised and recessed surface detail that is really nice - a little light on the underside. Ive got all but the fiddly bits together so far and I like what I’ve got. I’ve never built the Fujimi or Italeri offerings.

Fujimi also released a 1/48 scale kit of this bird a long time ago. As you might expect, it was not a good kit, certainly not by today’s standards. But I thought I might mention it too. I actually have this kit, and havent looked in the box for quite a while…but I just pulled it out of the closet and checked it out. Surface detail isnt bad on the fuselage and wings, but the cockpit is awful–slabs for seats and so on–the landing gear is plain, the gear bays and doors have no detail at all in them, you get the idea. If youre looking for just a basic kit of the Intruder, this one might not be a bad way to go, but I wouldnt recommend going to look for it. Oh, and this one builds into an A-6A model.

I am currently working on the Italeri kit in 1/72 scale and haven’t noticed any sink marks. I had a few issues with the wing alignment and a seam there, but the top of the fuselage went together so well that once joined with liquid cement, I knocked off the exess of plastic, sanded and no fill was required what so ever…

Revells 1/48 was originally issued in the late 80s. It had option of A-6E or A-6E TRAM. I built mine as a TRAM. Yes it has raised paenl lines (that does not really bother me) and Black Box made an after market resin cockpit set. Straight OOB it builds up nicely. I did nine about 18 years ago.

The 1/48 Fujimi kit is a full generation or two behind and really could use some detailing in the cockpit and wheelwells, as well as complete relacement of armament. But it does make an early Intruder…I have one in my stash that I am planning to make in to an A-6B one of these days.

Oops, I meant ejector pin marks (which I had believed because my last project was an Italeri Marder III and it was rife with them.) But since you say your kit is going together well I think this is the kit I will go with. I just realized how big this bird is to begin with, so 1/48 may actually be more size than I have room for.

Brian

The 1/48 kits do take up some room…especially since none of the kits offer a folded wing option

Well If you can wait…Trump is releasing a 1/32 A6 [:P]

No date of release yet but that what I hear. GM also has it in inventory with no pic and says price will be posted on release.

Now I cant wait to see that beheamoth!

Bob

Trumpeter will follow its standard practice of releasing the Intruder first in 1/32 scale, then scaled down versions in 1/48 scale & 1/72 scale. Following the release of the 1/32 scale kit, the 1/72nd scale kit will be released first, followed by the 1/48 versions. Still quite a ways out, though. This information comes from a very reliable source.

Or will the smaller Intruders come outunder the Hobby Boss label, like the A-7 and F-105?

Black Box makes a nice wing fold set for the Monogram EA-6

I built the Italeri 1/72 A-6E TRAM last year. I thought it was a decent kit.

Please tell me more about the 1/32 scale Intruder. [bow] Does anyone know when this kit will become available?

I have several of the Revel 1/48 kits.

I went ahead and ordered up the Italeri kit. Most likely it will be the next up on the bench after I finish my current build.

Brian

Doc, wish I knew when, I will sa this. IM BUYING THAT PUPPY!

That kit is going to be huge

Bob

I have that kit and the Italeri EA-6A as well and the Fujimi 1/72 scale kit to boot.

The Trump kit has been made as a resin subject, but the current status of the kit is unknown. Don’t hold your breath, it will probably be a few more years

Revell’s 1:48 scale A-6E is still the best Intruder kit you can find. Although it’s out of production you can still find it being sold on ebay but I caution… Buyer Beware.
