Well, it took a while to figure out what I could do to follow my Ju 290Z. And after much debate and debacle, I may have figured out what my next really huge project will be.
Now, she might not look like much, but me, being the quasi-rivet counter I am, I found ways to improve the kit. You see, this kit has some glaring inaccuracies. The REAL Zveno SPB (a Russian parasite program that actually saw combat in WWII) used a later version of the Tupolev TB-3:
The differences are striking. And I plan to do my best to fix them.
Now, major structural elements will be left alone. But many details (wheels, engines, turrets, nose glazings) will have to be changed in order to update the TB-3. It’ll probably be difficult, but I’m sure I’ll do my best.
I have several smaller projects that have been sitting around forever I need to finish first, but I’m eagerly researching this next big project, and making a few preliminary scratchbuilds, just to see if this will be possible. All indications point to yes!
Wish me luck! And I’ll be sure to keep everybody posted!
Should be a fun project. A freind of mine built the kit OOTB & found it quite a challenge. I thought you might try the 1/72 Heinkel He-111Z Zwilling being issued by Italeri. Would make a nice stablemate for the Ju 290Z.
KJ200- Yes, I may be a 1/72 scale modeler, but I am a sucker for the huge aircraft. Heck, my first project was a B-36! I actually have looked at an He 274 conversion, albiet in 1/72. It’d be much easier to do an early He 277, though.
mikeiw- I might be able to get away without any major corrugation, but I welcome the article in any case.
