90 Mustang LX 5.0 Drag Racer Revell kit

Decided on the next project:

The next project will be '90 Mustang LX 5.0 Drag Racer
This kit has been hanging out under my bench for about a year, looks like a fun build.

Lots of different colours would look good on that. Are you looking at any particular colour yet?

I haven’t made it that far yet, haven’t even opened the box yet. I was just thinking ahead since my other project is almost complete. That being said my favorite drag car paint schemes are flat black. Not sure if that’s the route I’ll go yet. I do like the red though, minus the body decals.

I thought I’d share the way I try to figure out schemes and paint colors nowadays:
I used chatgpt and asked it to show me a white, black, green ( this one I liked) and a green with a full black hood. This is what it created:

I liked the green with the black hood.
Next I asked it to match me up the colors if I were to use Tamiya x-xf paints, make me a chart and a map. It gave me this:

That’s how I start now days, let’s you visualize the project and help with the paint and mixing colors.

That’s an excellent kit! I have a few of those in my stash and I’ll definitely be watching this!
Can you give a link to that site? Is it just for cars or any modeling subject?
Here’s my friends 5.0 “Interceptor” Stang. This car for all its life was an unmarked LAPD detectives car and she still wears the original LAPD blue.
Still has the side mount for the spot light, hole in the dash for the computer and even came with the mini red flasher.

Happy Modeling,
Mike

Link here: chatgpt

Just using AI, chatgpt. It’s not modeling specific, you can literally ask it anything. There is also Grok and Gemini which I haven’t messed with much. Grok is better at image and video creation from what I understand.
Nice looking car your buddy has!

Personally I think the white and black both tend to hide the lines of the car, making it less appealing. That green w/black would be my choice, although a mid shade blue would also look sharp.

I think the green looks good, I didn’t want blue because my last project and a possible upcoming project are already blue. Can’t have a shelf full of blue builds.

Nice! I will be following this to see how it turns out. I have been meaning to pick up one of those kits,as there is a drag racer I follow on YouTube that runs one and I was thinking about trying to replicate his car.

29$ at hobbylinc as we speak. I wanta say I picked it up from there when it was on sale for a week like 30% off but it’s been well past the lifespan of my memory, like a year.

ok for those interested, here is what’s in the box

Everything looks pretty good, no flashing, no loose parts. I started by inspecting the body, marking the spots that need sanding and making the pannel lines deeper.

I grabbed the chromed parts and put them in a bag with some oven cleaner, let it sit about an hour then washed it off with dawn dish soap.

Next I sanded off the raised spots on the distributor leaving just enough to mark with a sharpie then drilled holes.

Assembled the engine block, primed and painted it, mixed up some Tamiya x-5 green and x-8 lemon yellow 10:3 with 50% x-20 thinner and hit the valve covers, let them dry. Pin washed the engine, and installed the valve covers. painted the starter and slapped it in place as well.

Next I painted the distributor, and started adding plug wires, I cut the boots at a 45°, ran the wire through and bent it over then used super glue to make it stay put ……like a good spark plug wire.

Lastly for the day I primed and painted the floor of the cab, and used embossing powder for carpet because who wants to drag race an uncomfortable no carpet car?

That’s it for today.

Fun update, New Year’s Eve evening our fridge took a poopie, it’s been repaired under warranty 3 times in 7 years and the warranty is out of date, it was a dash to fill the coolers with ice and save what we could which wasn’t much by the time my wife noticed. So yesterday we purchased a new one, all said and done 2700$. Happy new year, looking forward to what else 2026 brings lol

Got a mini in the garage for that. Wife said my beer took up too much space so she “made” me get a beer fridge in the garage….

A few days ago I shot the exhaust, fan, rear dif cover with fusionfirm liquid chrome. First time using it vs molotow or just chrome paint. Painted the parts gloss black Tamiya x-1, then shot the chrome. Layed down crazy good. So fast forward two days. I used nitrile gloves and did notice that handling did dull it down, that being said it was over the top shiny and it may need more than two days to fully cure. Anyways I heat stained the exhaust, installed the exhaust on the engine, set the role cage in place and glued the joints together. Oh and installed the oil filter. Shot the center console, parts of the seats, parts of the door with Tamiya xf-24. Cut slots in the seats for the 4 point seatbelts I have. I think that’s all so far.

Looks good! Molotow is an awesome chrome but super sensitive to touch.
