I’m looking for this Airfix kit, number 03034 (vintage 1987) probably molded in France, no longer in production to get the canopy, turret parts, observation blisters, and other transparencies that were missing from the kit I have. Anyone have parts for this model in their scrap box? I have located a conopy for it (vacuform) through Squadron but I haven’t had luck with the other components. I suspect I will have to put my miniature engineering cap on and go to work scratch-building these! It is a relatively good kit considering it is over two decades old, but it is an Airfix! Anyone having info/parts for this aircraft please get in touch with me through this forum. And also, there are photo references out there for this aircraft as well as a lot of the other Soviet WWII, Korea/Cold War, and current fighters/bombers at http://www.primeportal.net . Check them out and you will be amazed what there is available. Thanks in advance for any and all info. 737man.
Hey I just built this Airfix kit, but the kit # on mine is 258 and I think 1970 vintage. The kit was made in England , I actually prefer these old kits myself. This was built up for the Weekend Madness GB two weeks ago. Granted I could have built this a lot nicer but time was ticking. Start to finish it took 28.5 hrs. I still need to give it a dull coat , but have none in my supply. The kit quality was good, office space was sparse and for old plastic it built well with no gremlins.
I don’t suppose there were any extra clear parts in your kit box, were there? Ha ha! Still looking for the transparency parts sprue so I can complete mine. I’ve sent an e-mail to Airfix, not expecting much in return needless to say considering my kit has been out of production for easily over a decade (circa 1987) but can’t be certain of the exact build date. However I do have a vacuform canopy on the way from Squadron, which will fill the void for the hardest part I have missing from the kit. Most of the other parts are pretty much flat so I can fab them from flat styrene I suppose. Wish me luck…More difficult things have been accomplished I’m sure. I’m amazed at some of the things that have been done in this magazine…At 58 I’m trying to pull my talents at modeling back into line with some of these artists. I’m sure it’s do-able in time. Thanks for the reply; Your model looks great! I would like to see more pics from different angles though and closer up. Rick (737man).
Zvezda kit ?
Thanks 737man,
I did have some clear parts left over but nothing you would want. I really was thinking hard about replacing and fabricating the turrent dome with the end off a ink pen. (after some reshaping and polishing of course) The little “mushroom” shaped windows I used Microscale “Micro Kristal Klear” as there was no way they would have ever fit right. I wish I would of done the same for the “Oval” windows also. I really would reccomend using Kristal Klear to make those 4 windows on yours.
There are mors pictures of my build at the Weekend Madness GB on page 28. Nothing is very close up [;)]as you have to remember this was started and completed in 28.5 hrs… [(-D]
Hey, thanks for the reply. Yeah I had thought about using Microscale Chrystal Kleer for the odd-shaped window ports as I had experience using it back when I was building model trains and there weren’t too many window kits available for locomotive cab windows. I just wasn’t sure I could get it to expand that far without looking too “hokey” or exagerrated. The idea of the ink pen is good also. Since I put in the request I have purchased the vacuform canopy set (Falcon) from Squadron and it also has many other canopies for othe Soviet aircraft in the same box! What a bargain! I am in the process of collecting some of the more “rare” Soviet models for later builds, as well as French and Italian kits that aren’t too prolific on the market. Thanks again for your assistence with this. I also ordered the interior set from Neomega. It’s amazing what you can locate when you get online and ask a few questions…I’ve been out of this hobby way too long! So many kits…So little time! Have a good one. 737man.
