Could any one recommend some aftermarket 1:48 scale 50 cals? I read that brass barrels are availible, but the rest of the gun isn’t mentioned, nor is the price.
Any help in this area is appreciated, thanks in advance.
Aires makes (or perhaps used to make?) a rather beautiful resin and photo etch M2. I have seen them used in a B-17 build in the aircraft section. I do remember they were on the expensive side, but if money is no object then they are darn sweet looking.
re: .50 caliber MG. About the best complete guns available are the resin casting that were produced by Verlinden. These were included in several vehicle sets and were released as a set of four guns in a box. I don’t believe that these are currently in production but they show in websites, vendor tables and on eBay. Combining these with a turned barrel should produce a nice rendition of the M2HB.
Second (IMHO) would be the guns from Gaso.line, although personally I’m not as impressed with their barrel. Fortunately several of the kit fifties in plastic are not bad and can be brought up to “decent” status with a little work. 1/48th has an advantage that some of the kit guns are close in size and shape as opposed to the early days of 1/35th scale where the kit parts looked nothing like an M2HB.
Iam not an AM “hater”, but, I really enjoy the modelling challenge of reworking the plastic (kit supplied) or accessory weapons set (Tamiya) - you save a boat load of money, and you can really make these crew served weapons look great with a little applied skill IMHO. Just something to think about:
