40 Years Ago Today

40 years ago today at 6:32 AM CDT Apollo 11 lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center on it’s way to the Moon. NASA began streaming the air to ground communications of the Apollo 11 mission at 6:32 CDT this morning and will continue streaming the entire mission. Apollo 11’s LEM, “Eagle”, landed on the moon at 20:17 Zulu (15:17 EST) on July 20th 1969. So try to log on to the NASA stream at 15:00 EST on Monday and listen to to the thrill ride that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had.

Armstrong: “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” - Capcom Charles Duke: “Roger, Twan… [correcting himself] Tranquility. We copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We’re breathing again. Thanks a lot.”

This is really cool! NASA just released clean-up videos of the Apollo 11 missions too: http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/hd/apollo11.html

I’m working on a Revell 1/144 scale Apollo 11 Saturn V with my three and a half year old son. I’m doing a lot of the work, but he’s actually helping and really enjoying it. He’s already a huge enthusiast of the Moon missions, rockets, astronaughts, etc.

I’m 35, turning 36 in December. A lot of the space race was before my time, but I well remember the excitement surrounding the Moon missions and Skylab mission from my youth. I’m glad that my son, at least, is also infected by that same excitement – and at about the same age I got it.
