her is a little project I’m working on for the Artillery GB. A 24 pounder naval gun from Palmer Plastics.
It looks like an easy build, although it has a brass plated barrel and other parts. I’m going to paint them with Krylon flat black.
The barrel trucks are supposed to be wood, but the kit did not have any wood grain, so I made some myself with an Xacto blade. I think it turned out pretty well.
Here are the trucks and barrel dry-fitted. It is much bigger that I thought.
The barrel obviously needed some filling work. I think it’s going to look pretty cool when I’m done.
Next I scribbled the trucks as assembled stacked wood and painted with Testers acrylic “wood”, and dry brush of Burnt Umber acrylic (starting to become my favorite color) and an oil wash of Brunt Umber oil. I think it turned out alright.
Looking good. The wood parts look good. Good job on the scribing of the wood grain. Before you proceed on the barrel, you should remove the chrome so paint will adhere to it well. To do so, soak it overnight in bleach and the chrome will diappear.
Thanks for following guys,
I worked a little on the barrel last night and painted it. It looks like I need to do a little more work on the locating pin dimples at the center of the barrel.
I also attached some cotton to the ramrod plastic swab with some thin acrylic medium. Hopefully it will look plausible as a swab when it dries.
This is a pretty neat little kit, that lends itself to some fun improvements.
Well I fixed the barrel and went out and bought some twill twine to replace the rope that came with the kit. It won’t be long now, I just have to put everything together.
I’m super happy with the way the wood came out. Palmer Plastics also made a “Civil War Field Piece” (doesn’t give the ball weight) and a Gatling Gun which would be pretty cool.
I’m mounting it onto a base with planking. I wanted to add a ship’s wall and cannon port as well, but that would have been another project. I still need to work up some rope and then take some final picture in my “studio” (garage with proper lighting).
I’m done with the 24 Pounder. It was a real joy to build this kit. Everything fit well and besides some filling on the barrel, there were no real problems. The kit was a little lacking in the detail department, however it lended itself to several enjoyable upgrades. It’s a shame it is not produced at present, as far as I know.
I am seriously thinking of hunting down Palmer Plastic’s Civil War Cannon and Gatling Gun to add to the collection.
