24 Hours of Le Modelling - Gundams

On Nov. 15-16, 2024, Aaron Skinner and I did a 24 hour continuous live stream on YouTube we coined the 24 Hours of Le Modelling in celebration of Build a Model Month. We would build for 24 hours straight and see what happened during that time.

The challenge: Each of us would build a Gundam in the livery of a famous racing team. I chose to dress mine in the 1988 Le Mans Shell Porsche 962C driven by Stuck and Bell. (I’ll let Aaron post about his.)

The response to the live stream was very positive and we had viewers from around the world join us. Some spent upwards of 14 hours hanging out with us while we built.

Neither of us finished our models that night, but they did get finished. I spent a total of 60 hours on mine, counting the 24 hours of the live stream—I barely started painting by the time we were out of time!

Anyway, here’s the 24 Hours of Le Mans Shell Porsche F91 Battle Chassis piloted by Stuck and Bell.

Here’s the Subazaku WRC (Weaponized Rally Cat) just back from a competition in Finland. Mine moved along quicker on the night, mostly because it was an older, somewhat simpler (as in less parts) kit than the one Tim built. Ultimately, I probably spent in the neighborhood of 50 hours on mine, probably half on decals an weathering.

What a creative way to choose to paint them. Amazing look for both and really like the weathering.
Any chance the live stream was recorded? If so is there a link to it?
Enjoying the builds you both are sharing. Please keep it up!

Ah, yes, well, you see … learning curve. As it turns out, YT will archive a live stream that is up to 12 hours long. We didn’t know this (this being the first time we’d done something like this) and went BIG. And we didn’t back it up on our end cuz we thought YT would have it for us. So, no. The link tot he video still exists on YT, but the archive doesn’t exist. It was like a live concert: You had to be there.

OTOH, don’t think it will be the only time we do something like it. Already, ideas are percolating…

LOL. Completely understand. Like you said, learning curve.
Hopefully I’ll be able to catch the next event. :slightly_smiling_face:

Those two Gundams look fantastic. A very creative way to decorate them combining Sci Fi and automotive genres.

Thanks, Tom! It occurs to me that it might have been a good idea to include images of the cars to give people an idea of what we were shooting for.

Did you guys use the decals from those tamiya kits for your builds or find custom decals somewhere else?

We used the decals from those kits.

I really dig the colors on your Gundam. Cool work.
I was kind of thinking, what if that Gundam didn’t have racing decals, logos, etc., but instead had McDonalds fast food restaurant decals and such? The color scheme of your Gundam would fit perfectly! Then you could say the Gundam was in a franchise fast food wars!

We came up with some lore: The 24 Hours of Le Man, in the future, becomes a combat tournament. Fight for 24 hours and eliminate opponents over that time. The Gundam mobile suits are equivalent to F1 and Indy car–light, fast, extremely mobile, and would be used in urban environments. The Zaku type suits would be rally, Dakar equivalents–big wilderness environments.

I didn’t see this when you posted it but building for 24 hours straight is just insanely cool. You must guys must be young enough not to need a nap here and there. lol

The results of both of you guys labor yielded some truly magnificent results. Thanks for sharing this with us fellas.
