2026 Modeling Goals

Tom - reading your post was like looking into a mirror. Except I entered this winter building season with the goal of buying no more kits - already bought two and considering 3 or 4 more. Lord-willing maybe I’ll be able to resist the urge. 12 to 15 completed kits would be a good year and already I have 1 finished and 3 in the build process - off to a good start.

I’m a bit jealous of that! My window opens up-down and is difficult to move, so I didn’t want to depend on having to open it each time I use the booth. My booth is my own design and uses two “muffin” fans, which will be (combined) ducted to a 4" round opening in a Lexan sheet that will fit into the open window space. I’ve got a dryer-vent type flap for the outside, and a slide gate for the inside to close it and keep crawlies out! All that remains is purchasing the Lexan and cutting the appropriate hole, then biting the bullet and making the installation. I’ll have to jam insulation or something at the top of the open window to close off that gap, but hopefully I can get something done that isn’t too ugly. I currently have taped posters to the window to reduce direct sunlight, anyway, so maybe it won’t be visible…

I’m somewhat fortunate when it comes to modeling space,it’s actually 1500 sq ft,same footprint as the house, one big open space unfinished with ceilings. The amount of spraying I do doesn’t really amount to much,so outside of a respirator, the fumes don’t really cause a problem for me or my wife upstairs.

I do my airbrushing/model storage in the garage where I allocate 1 of 3 parking spots to my shop. I finally had a guy put in a 4" dryer vent. I’d have done it myself but the 4" hole saw that can cut through stucco was about the same cost as the guys quote to do it  . Very happy with the result.

Sounds like you have a great plan and honestly, I’d rather have a more permanent installation because this setup is kind of ugly (excuse my mess). I’m considering rearranging my work space so the booth in in front of the window and I shorten that clunky hose and come up with something like you are planning.

finally had a guy put in a 4" dryer vent.

That is exactly what I would like, I’m in a second story bedroom so the dryer vent on the outside would require a tall ladder and I don’t love that idea but, maybe I can find a guy…

You guys have some great setups! For your amusement, here’s a pic of my “spray booth.” When I’m ready to spray (with rattle can), I step outside the garage and set this up. Not usable in wind, rain or cold, but it’s getting me through my beginner stage.

Similar to what I use. Been thinking about getting one of those fancy booths from Scamazon but with the holidays can’t afford it right now.

I did the same thing for years! Quality of models has not improved with a spray booth

I’ve posted about my workbench before, still haven’t scanned and shared details of the booth I designed and built myself. Here’s the workbench:

The spray booth was built from foam board and is held together with duct tape. The filter you see in the back covers a plenum with two “muffin” fans that are mounted on the top of the back, and those will get standard 140mm duct adapters to connect round 4" duct. The duct will be directed to the left wall and then straight toward the camera and then a turn “off photo left” to go out the window there.

I just need to get the Lexan and assemble the danged thing!

This won’t work for everyone but (I stole this idea from YouTube) my booth vents through a dryer filter back into the room.

Not sure how clear it is but it’s against the wall on the left side of the picture. I bought the vent thing on Amazon.

You can also see a portion of my stash in the cabinet under it. The stash continues on the other side of the cabinet and under the work bench to it’s right. My kids’ stash is on the table on the right side.

I like the concept of this, and I looked at something similar, but my reason for venting outside is because I’m starting to use lacquers and enamels more and I don’t want to vent fumes back into the work space. I looked at some carbon cartridges designed for removing odors from indoor grow tents, but I feel the activated charcoal would have to be regenerated frequently and I don’t want to do that indoors, either, so…to paraphrase Lady MacBeth, “out, out, danged fumes!”

Totally understand. That’s why I said it won’t work for everyone. I rarely use enamels and lacquers but when I do I brush them on.

Wow dadoffour and Tojo72, the size of your modeling/work bench space is impressive and expansive to say the least!

Thanks Tom! I’m blessed to have a large unfinished basement where I can set up my work space.

I’m gonna say - to make a dent in my stash. I used to limit myself to a total of 15 kits in my stash. That way I could have several kits to choose from when starting a new model, but without it getting completely out of hand  aka so my wife doesn’t think I’m more nuts than I already am…

I’m at like 25 kits at the moment, so to get down to maybe 20 would be the goal, while acquiring and building kits throughout the year of course.

Build more kitbashes and weird stuff  I have a bunch of build ideas kicking around in my head, I have the kits, I just need to start in on them and not get caught up in grabbing something new and building it OOB. Or if I do build something conventionally, I’ll try to find an unusual paint scheme – Assembly ships, anyone?

I went from 10 to 24 kits in the stash this year (26 if you count the two currently under construction). My shelves are full even after I played tetrus with the boxes to get everything to fit, while keeping things in their respective groups. I have my USMC column and my army/airforce/navy sections and the bombers at the very top (the A-6 wouldn’t fit anywhere else) and these is a 1/48 scale B-1B on the floor because it is enormous.

I will not allow any more unless there is physical room for them and I hope to get through at least 4 bext year.

Good luck! I made this same promise to myself and wound up finding more physical room before clearing anything out of the stash. I’m now at the point where I really mean it, I can’t think of anywhere else to store stuff. Maybe I need to buy another cabinet…

@Samphoto and @gomeral, although that’s a very fair goal, I think I see an issue…..
Kit boxes don’t stack properly in shelves or cabinets. There is always empty space, probably about 10% wasted storage. Plus another 10% for the structure itself, means that you have room for at least 20% more models in your stack area if you get rid of the shelving and just stack them floor to ceiling.

Happy to be of assistance. :joy::joy::joy::joy::joy:
