2 Wash or Not 2 Wash?

Just painted the main body of a 1/35 12.7mm DShK machine gun (it will go on the turret of a JS-IIIM tank) a beautiful buffing gunmetal. I rubbed it to metallic shine.

I’m wondering if it makes sense to apply a thinned black wash into the recesses. I’m tempted just to dry brush with steel and leave it alone; think the thin wash will be invisible against the dark grey of gunmetal anyway.

What do you guys think?

Now, the barrel-receiver element of that MG is gunmetal but other parts of the weapon will be green and those will be dark washed and highlighted as usual.

I don’t wash mine. After spraying with the gunmetal Metallizer, the only thing I add is a subtle drybrush with silver to highlight the gun and give it a little “wear”. I will put a wash and dry brush on the ammo box, since it should be about the same Russian amor green as the rest of the tank.

Conversely, for anything dark like that, I would wash it with a thicker mix of straight black, just to make sure I got all the shadows taken care of, giving it a good wipe at the end.
Actually, when I do gun barrels, I paint the whole thing black to begin with and then drybrush with metallic gray to get a “gunmetal” look, after which I don’t bother washing it at all.
Works for me![:D]

HEY,
Great ideas!
