1'st Build for 09

Old Kits are Great I feel every time you build one you turn back the aging clock. I pulled this 1/72 Matchbox Junkers Ju 188 out of the stash for a easy , quick relaxing build.

As you can see the kit was molded in three yummy colors.

MBJI was told by a friend I should not have painted over that nice color combination.

First paint

MBJ-1

Second paint - I decided to do this plane “Gear Up” as it came with this really Nice Stand (no not the freezer cup or tape roll)

MBJ-2

I used Badger Frisket Film to Mask the Four Piece canopy. I wont tell you how many times I messed up cutting them.

MBJ-6

Here she is all decorated for the shelf.

MBJ-7Thanks for Looking in [:)]

Nice looking build, especially when you consider Matchbox kits of that vintage weren’t exactly shake-n-bake lits.

Can’t believe you masked that canopy the hard way, I wouldn’t touch that without an Eduard pre-cut mask!

It looks excellent. Almost hard to believe its an old Matchbox, in it’s finished form.

But I wonder: what was the purpose of the wild colors? Was it just to entice the childish mind with lurid plastic?

Something Ive always admired is in-flight models and especially the way Pat Hawkey did them.

He simply removed the prop blades and then filled the spinners. This led the viewer to make the mental leap to a propeller. If you have some spares in the junk drawer, you might consider giving that a try.

Beautiful clean build, nice crisp job on the window masking. Being a fan of the Ju-188 myself, you make a convincing argument o pick one of these up for myself.

Well done Sean! Hard to believe the age of that kit. You turned this one into a real winner. [^]

Great work there Sean. great to see thise old Matchbox kits being built. I have one of these in the stash to do too. it’s about time we had a ‘Matchbox Madness’ G/B on here.

All the best.

Greg

That’s a beautiful build of an old kit[tup] However, your friend might have something there about the molded colors. Could have been a WWII version of the Flying Circus!

Thanks for sharing.

[bow] on a fast crisp build Sean!

(SHEESH!..relaxing he calls it!)

[#ditto]

Yikes

Thank You to all who took the time to look and all the Kind and encouraging comments. [:D]

Mike - I have been cutting masks like that for some time now. I did order and recieve edward masks for two PBY’s I am working on. They might spoil me.

David - I always enjoyed Pat’s models. I was toying with the idea of cutting clear disk and airbrushing prop blurs on them . But I know that will take some practice to look good.

Deattilio - You should find one and build it , although I am sure there are way better detailed kits of the Ju188 out there.

Frank - Your to kind, [:I] The date on the Box and instructions was 1974 , sheesh I was 10 yrs old then.

Greg - I would be all for a Matchbox GB, thats what I like about the UAMF as I get to see lots of these older kits being built.

Tom - Thank you [:)] I am going to have to build one of these molded in color kits without paint just for the fun of it. Matchbox had some bright colors.

LT (Nam) - I will send you one so you can see how relaxing they can be !

Roger - Thanks for the Spike [(-D] Now go find one and build while your not counting Cacti !

Sean, my friend. Good job. I cant believe its 1/72. The glass is GOOD! Thanks for the look see…Harv

Thats beautiful! Always great seeing Matchbox kits. Brings me back to them early days.

Very nice, can’t believe that you did not just keep the yellow plastic for the wings [}:)], good job on the kit. I would have weathered her a little bit though.

Nice build Sean. The only way to tell its a Matchbox is the 3inch thinck framing for the canopy.

Nice quick build Sean but I would hardly call cutting masks for all those windows relaxing! [:O] Some people are into self torture though. [;)]

Nice nostalgia build, Sean, your camo looks great!

I don’t think you’re crazy for cutting the masks, it’s the same kind of exercise as drilling out the holes in a Monogram SBD’s dive brakes. I look on it as a kind of meditation exercise [:)]

Regards,

Brad

One! One cacti!!! Ha ha ha!

Two! Two Cacti!!! Ha ha ha!

Attractive on a number of levels, Summit. First seeing a model in the air (where it belongs) is always a treat. Second, taking on an old, less than cutting edge kit can be fun. Especially handled like this; not asking it to be much more than it was meant to be. (If nothing else I think this is an excellent mental health exercise for modelers. Occasionally just glue the parts together and paint the result. Period.) I think your 70/71 camo is very good contrast-wise. There wasn’t much difference in those colors that I could ever see. I’m sure many folks wouldn’t give this '188 a second look, wanting to see something “colorful”. You know what? Most military airplanes aren’t particularly colorful. A “plain” scheme, an un-weathered scheme, emphasises the subject instead of the finish. Nothing wrong with that. And kudos for taking on that canopy.

NIce, nice job.

WOW tha looks awesome, did the stand come with the kit or did you modify one from your spare parts box? can’t wait to see it in person.are you dug out from the snow yet? talk to ya later.great model.

Roger - Dont lose count and have to start over [(-D]

Schnord05 - Thank you for taking the time to replyand the Nice Comments , I really like these old kits as a nice distraction from the “super kits” Like I said everytime I build one of these I have turned back the aging clock. It’s a good feeling [:)]

Armornut - Thank You Very much , the stand actually came with the kit. I have a box full of extras if you want / need a few for 1/72 Aircraft though. Eh - we are dug out enough to get out if needed be , and I tunned a path to the front door last week as Fedex was delivering a parcel from Squadron.
