1974 IROC Camaro

Used a 1970 1/2 AMT Camaro kit to make this 1974 Camaro.

Hello! Interesting! So what is IROC - I used to see that designation a long time ago… Didn’t have the opportunity to ask back then…

Thanks for sharing and have a nice day

International Race Of Champions. I believe it’s a series for different genres of motor sport. For example stock car drivers race in the series with Indy, sportscar, and other types of the sport

RIP Al Unser

MarkJK-excellent job on the Camaro-would love to see the work in progress notes & pics.

Adding to what wpwar11 wrote-In additional, all drivers drove the same make of car (spec car prepared by the IROC, I believe, so all the cars were equal). Cars were assigned (or picked-I don’t remember) with the ability to make limited changes (if at all). First couple of years were Porsche 911’s, then the move to Camaro’s.

Excellent work!

Nice job. They make great looking race cars.

This model depicts the iroc 2 champion Bobby Unsers car. 1974 was the first year Camaro was used as the iroc car. It was basically a stock Camaro with a roll cage and a Traco 336 c.i. engine making 440 horsepower. they built 15 of them and raced 12 with 3 as reserve cars. If you google iroc 1974 you will find a lot of stuff on them. Thanks everybody for the great feedback.

Superb.

my mistake. I thought this might be a racer driven by Al Unser. Anyway, great work and thanks for sharing it.

I’ve never been much of a Camaro fan but I really like how your build looks especially with the racing scheme. Well done!

I’m not sure about Al Unser but Al Unser Jr. won 2 IROC championships

Bobby, Al, and Al Jr. (twice) all won IROC in Chevy Camaros. 1975, 1978, 1986 and 1988, respectively. A 1974 Camaro is most likely Bobby Unser.

The 74 Camaro body was used until 1980. In 1977 they started using a Banjo chassis because the stock unibody chassis was not very safe if the car suffered a major crash like Bobby suffered in the first race of the 74/75 season at Riverside. Since it happened at the start of the race they decided to restart the race with him in one of the spare cars. He was unhurt in the accident as you can see was horrendous.

I forgot to mention the reason the air cleaner does not have a top on it is because the hood served as the top of the air cleaner. A shallow tunnel was made into the underside of the hood and it matched up to the air cleaner. this allowed air to enter the air cleaner from the base of the windshield which is a high pressure area. I had to scratch build the air cleaner because none come in a kit that quite look like that. Made the element too.

Thanks again for all the great replies.
