1966 VW Beetle from Tamiya

I just wrapped up my build on this 1966 VW Beetle from Tamiya.

As with just about every Tamiya kit the parts had lots of detail and there were no issues with fitment. This was a great kit to build.

As you can see, it is not stock.

I 3D printed a dropped front beam to lower the front end.
I designed and 3D printed lowered rear swing arms.
I 3D printed the ragtop sunroof.
And the 3D printed turbo engine is from Iceman Collections

The exterior color is Grand Prix Maroon, which is a classis Nissan color.
The interior color is a custom mix. Both interior and exterior colors are from Splash Paints.

Chrome work is a combination of paints and coatings. The bumpers are SMS Hyperchrome. I normally don’t clearcoat chrome because that dulls the finish, but I didn’t want the bumpers to be too bright, so I applied Alclad Aquagloss.

The side trim and hood trim is BMF.

The window trim is Revell chrome spray.

And the ragtop sunroof track was an aluminum color from Mr Hobby, but it started rubbing off in spots (maybe because I didn’t primer the parts). So I rubbed some Ush VandSputin Chrome powder into the trick to add some shine.

And now for the pics.
(I really need to get a small aperture lens)

Beaut of a Beetle Chad! The maroon was an excellent choice, and finely executed. And your various metallic effects work, I’d say. Great finish.

That’s nice, I like the details and the sunroof.

Man that is DROP DEAD gorgeous (no pun intended). The mods you’ve pulled off to make this beauty happen are right on bud. That paint work is something to be proud of as well. Excellent build.

Stunning work! That maroon color is perfect for that “Bug”. Great job on the canvas sunroof too. I just love these classic old VWs.

Very nice! Great finish in a pretty cool color. I have the '68 Revell kit in the stash. A bug on the shelf will be very cool
